Great pains have been taken to prevent entry to this building and the construction is for an obvious working purpose but I simply cannot remember what this style of building was for. Anyone help here?? If it's single storey, does it have a flat roof? Could something (quarried stone?) be tipped into waggons passing beneath through the arches? Perhaps it's made secure to stop people falling through?    Great idea Si. The building is stone so it may well be quarry linked and may be some sort of loading bay. AFAICR it is re-roofed with a pitched roof so it could have been flat roofed, it could have taken stone from the roadway and quarry and loaded it down onto carts etc.The odd door/window is bricked up and there's large metal sheets to cover the giant archway openings so maybe inside there are structure people could be injured exploring. It would of course have ben easier to level it. Now we have a conservation order maybe it, and the brick georgian house, will be preserved. But I won't holf my breath that the right buildings are ever conserved or the right area picked.I'd be fascinated to hear more about these buildings and wonder if at least the house will appear in old directories which I think a few seceret Leeders have.Scott Wood Lane would have been a proper address in them there days??? Anyone got a directory!!

The 1947 listings are the corporation houses at the Potternewton end still there today. On the old scott wood lane through the woods there is listed only Mr. Stephenson. I wonder if the big house that sits there today is indeed Mr. Stephensons, because it is far older than 1908/1916.Many of the structures along scott wood lane on the 1906 map are glasshouses/greenhouses so I assume he ran a lot of these along the valley side. The grand house may have been someone elses early 1800's and it fascinates..........There is the idea that many "quarrymans cottages" existed along the lane. The quarries may have stopped working by your directory dates, I don't know, but no quarrymans cottage is listed. Again fascinating stuff.THANK YOU AGAIN

In the 1881 directory there is a Joseph Bradley listed as a quarry owner living in Meanwood but no further information. There is also a George Thompson of Potternewton Lane and a Robert Whitehead [with quarries at] Meanwood, Leeds and Oulton but no indication of where he lived.

Sadly, the 1881 is only a trade directory and doesn’t list residential so I can’t offer any more info. The former library at Sheepscar deals with West Yorks. archive stuff and has a very wide range of trade, street and other directories. Problem being you’ll now need a CARN ticket to use it. This is because of all the pages going missing from books caused – allegedly – by silly so and so’s researching their family history. Rant over.
