A group of we friends had them fitted by a professional firm, ready for the first day of legal operation. I have the licences somewhere still - I believe £12 but may be wrong. CB Radio could have been a marvellous and useful facility and for those using it properly was most enjoyable. Sadly, however, it was spoilt by a huge proportion of users with little to say just "acting the goat" and at their very best just incessantly asking for the time or for the locations of other folks. Considering what was involved the sets and accessories were really cheap to buy - of course the majority were removable for theft prevention, and the poor sliding contacts of the in car bracket could be troublesome. I was very sorry though to have to give it up for the above failure by the majority to exploit its full potential - and I daresay that mobile phones would probably have seen it off anyway. As a multi storey flat dweller my callsign was "Towerman" and the leader of our gang, who was rather bossy, was "The Ayotollah."

Yes but have you seen how easy it is to apply for one?http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/bu ... 06613.aspx     That's for a Waste Carriers licence, but if you store the scrap in your yard, you need a Waste Management licence - much, much harder to come by. For an "O" licence (Operator's Licence, as mentioned above by Trojan) I think you also now need a CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) in National Road Haulage, so no, they don't give 'em out for milk-bottle tops. A CPC is not easy to obtain (especially if you haven't taken any sort of course followed by an exam since school!)

I can't say I remember your handle Blakey. I was only a youngster back then, so I didn't use it much myself although, our paths may have crossed if you ever attended the C.B. clubs in Morley back in the early 80's. If you were a member, I probably collected your club badge from the engravers on Dewsbury Road.

No actually I was never connected with any clubs or societies for CB, so I imagine we haven't "met" on the airwaves.     I still regret the demise of the system and wish it was still on the go and in general use.
