Didn't there used to be the Blackburn Aircraft Co just about where Tesco is on Roundhay Road. There used to be a tram express track on this stretchof the road.

There was also Hitchens in Briggate. I remember as kid they had the best Father Christmas/grotto. My wife used to work at the GPO (now BT) in Basinghall Street, so Marshall & Snelgrove was a conveniently located store to visit.
Seeing Yeadon mentioned brings back memories of being stationed there in 1950/51. I'd been posted from RAF Thornaby as they went over to Vampires and Meteors (apolgies for the non-leeds comment!)
What about all the old laundry's that were dotted around Leeds. The Hygenic (now Sunlight), Bramley Steam (Demolished), Moorfield laundry (now part of Brooks Linen)... ... ...anymore?

Apologies FevLad; just read your post. I knew Frankie Vaughn from his College of Art days; I was at Leeds Technical College. I think he lived in Louis Street in the Chapeltown district; I went there once. He was really genuine guy. My wife and I saw him when he was playing at the Palladium in London. He invited us to go into his dressing room and meet his wife, Stella. Like I said, a totally 100% genuine gentleman without any kind of an 'edge'.
Think Vallences were previously called Vallance & Davison on the corner of Market Street Arcade and Briggate. I remember the Odeon (now Primark) being the Paramount. Higher up was the Assembly Rooms picture house. There once was a guy playing piano non stop there to break a world record. I also remember before Jimmy Saville was the manager, there used to be a guy called Bruno Forte. I think the bandleader was a guy called Syd Pearce. Later, Derek Sinclair.
