The White Cross in Pudsey is currently undergoing a £250,000 renovation by Punch Taverns, it's due to re-open next Friday, 20th Nov. They've replaced all the windows and been rendering the exterior today.... decking down out front and rumours of a kids play area. Food will be served too though from the menu it doesn't look exactly gourmet! A welcome renovation though, was looking pretty rough, and nice to know with all that investment it won't be getting any worse.Anyone know anything about Punch? I know they have the Lawnswood Arms amongst many others.... are they good / bad, is is good news for that end of Pudsey? Hope so cos I live there!

As for the Barleycorn, that's been dead a while. No surprises really, it always lost out trade-wise to the Old Star and Half Moon. It must have been the Italian for at least eight years if not more. The Angel in Wetherby, always a landmark boozer, is also to become an Italian - part of the same portfolio as the bloke who owns the former Barleycorn. As for long lost pubs, a pal and I had the good fortune of seeing the inside of the Crown at Crown Point Bridge. The police had wrapped up an operation down there and allowed us in for a peek. Perfectly preserved. A real priviledge.

There is an advert in tonights YEP fooffering the Myrtle Tavern at Meanwood for sale - nothing fancy, just a column in the lineage section.Lets hope it finds a good owner (although I haven't been in there since the 80's when it was a Whitbread house, so have no idea what it's like now)

In its present ghostly sad state its hard to believe what Hunslet must have been like in the pub's heyday - honest comradeship and World respected heavy industry and so forth. If only someone could restore it if only as a heritage exhibit.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

A pal and I had been doing a tour of the remaining Holbeck / Hunslet pubs (they're shutting down ten a penny) and the place was surrounding by coppers with the metal shutter over the door open. Turns out they'd just caught somebody they were looking for after being tipped-off that he was squatting in the old Crown. God knows how he'd got in. Anyway, they were waiting for somebody to come fix new metal sheeting to the door and kindly let us have nosey inside. A magical experience really, wish I'd had a camera with me.

Given all the redevelopment in that area, plus further residential in the pipeline once the economy picks up I just wonder if there is a slim chance that someone would reconsider opening The Crown?Clarence Dock and Brewery Wharf are well established and just minutes away, and the old Yorkshire Chemicals site and even Tetleys are slated for residential builds in the next few years, with another scheme nearing completion on the corner opposite Crown Point Retail Park.It could be just the sort of place the Leeds Brewery could turn into a goldmine.

It was my pub of choice in the late 70s when run by Melvin and Shirley. Beautiful Tet's Mild! Although I've heard of them, I don't know anything about Punch Taverns.
