Tis such a shame it has to close and be knocked down. So many landlords, parties, karaoke evenings and punch ups outside, at chuckin out time, over the decades! :-O Round the corner on the left side of the pub (looking at that pic), the pub had a built in "offie". I remember being about 14 and me mum hadn't given up smoking then - she sent me to take our dog Sandy for a walk to the offie to get her some cigs and crisps. Whilst being served, I bunch of older teenager Broadlea "hardnuts" came in and started threatening me to give them the cigs I'd just bought.I were bricking it and expecting a beating. Sandy was a small "Lurcher" breed (½ whippet/½ terrier) yet the little guy sensed the threat and went(/I] for the thugs! I couldn't believe our soft pet turned into an attack hound! He scared them off and almost dragged me out of the offie to chase them! :-) But I digress again (so easy on S.Leeds with the memories it invokes)...T'Sannie were rough, but it were our local. It'll be missed on my trips home.
You can take the lad out of Leeds - but you can't take the Leeds out of the lad.

Talking about the 'offie' reminded me of my first visit to The Old Oak Tree.I went to the school opposite and we used to call in to the outsales at lunchtimes for pop and crisps. One or two of our teachers used to take a drop of something slightly stronger occasionally.Proberbly made the task of trying to teach us a bit more bearable.

I went to school with Carol Nelson too. Our other friend, Helen Kirk, lived in the Crown (Tong Road). Does anyone else remember the name of the big building at the back of Thornhill Road petrol station? It was a very posh club/pub when i was a kid and the gardener used to chase us out when we sneaked over the wall Bloody hell carrotol. Helen Kirk of the Crown. I went to school with her younger brother Stuart. Small world indeed!!

Name slips me at the mo, but I'll call someone who used it frequently. I take it your talking about the big old club buildings and not the Thornhill pub?

FARBANK:             Put you out of your misery.! The club at the 'back' of Thornhill St/Rd. [whatever], was the ALEXANDRA Club. Was 'affiliated' for awhile, but became 'members only' in its final stages. It was the venue for those that had the hobby of playing war -games with miniature armies, one day a week. {NOT me I add.I only played the real thing, against real soldiers].

The club has been gone fore a while now and a ruddy great hole where it was. building work going on now, so not long before a few houses or a block of apartments.

I don't know whether I'm going over ground which has already been covered. The Lloyds Arms on Duke Street and just round the corner on Marsh Lane The Railway.I played darts in the Lloyds one night, the pub was so cold one of our team played with gloves on.It was John Smiths, the Railway was Charringtons and I think they were both demolished around the same time when all the roads were altered.(cue photo from drapesy!)
