I can remember a trip to Manchester (don't ask!) in the late 90's and seeing a shop called "Greggs", that was identical in every respect (even down to the font used) to Thurstons apart from the name over the door, so the name change over here must have been after that.

From Wikipedia... ...Greggs was founded by John Gregg as a Tyneside bakery in 1939. It opened its first shop in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne in 1951.Major expansion began soon after it was taken over by his son, Ian, on John's death in 1964: this included the acquisitions of other bakeries such as Glasgow based Rutherglen in 1972, Leeds based Thurstons in 1974 and Manchester based Price's in 1976. In 1994 the Company acquired the Bakers Oven chain of bakers' shops from Allied Bakeries. In 1999 Greggs rebranded its 100 Braggs bakers shops as Greggs of the Midlands and its Leeds-based Thurston chain as Greggs of Yorkshire. In 2003 in an attempt to test the foreign market, Greggs opened four stores in Belgium; principally in Antwerp and Leuven. On 9 December 2008, Greggs announced that all of its 165 Bakers Oven branded shops would be re-branded into the Greggs brand, therefore the shops would benefit from the national advertising campaign in the hope to boost sales.

If you pop subway Leeds into google Steve, looking for the kind we talk about, you are presented with the location of every sandwhich shop of that name instead.Porkpies - must be on the ;good' list and compare well with others we've mentioned. As for costs, do you realise how high Greggs prices hav crept in the last 12 months? Not least of their humble sausage roll, small rises at regular intervals maked by multi-buy offers tend to hide these. I suspect this is in line with the profits

To quot Paul Weller "the public get what the public want". The majority want Greggs and Subway. A truth of reality there Regi, after all, if Jo public prefers one concern to another, where else will the support for the remainder come from?

In spite of the recession and money being limited, have you seen the queues outside Betty's in York Northallerton and Harrogate? Ok, I know they cater for a different clientele to both Ainsleys and Greggs but its interesting...even if it isn't Leeds!
