Harry Eastgate was there, he joined in 1970. And what a t*** he was. Nasty man. If you got the cane off him you had to bend over a chair near his desk and he would run from the corner of his office near the door and strike your backside with such force. I defy the hardest of men not to shed a tear after 6 of those. Then there was the strap he had. It was like a barbers strop, used for sharpening cut-throats for our younger readers!, only it was split into 3 for about 6 inches. If this was your punishment(sic) you had to sit on a chair with your hand out directly over your leg, this was if you moved your hand at the last minute you still got it on the thigh, and he'd hold the strap at head height and then quick as a flash "crack". That did sting let me tell you. He'd deal out these 'punishments' for the slighteset of indescretions, being late too many times, being caught smoking on school grounds, mouthing off to teachers, not wearing the correct school uniform... ... ... out and out child abuse if you ask me. A lot of this went on in the early 70's when the power strike was on. I think I have this right, and Leeds UTD couldn't play any night games so the played midweek during the day ( I may have this wrong and someone will correct me). Anyway with these midweek matches pupils would knock off school to go to the match. Harry Eastgate saw this as an opportunity for more caning to be dished out so he announced that anyone leaving school to go to the matches would, the following day, receive 1 stroke of the cane/strap for every goal scored. I managed to get a dentist appointment one day and had all afternoon off and went to the match. Luckily it was 0-0.The gym teachers when I was there were Westwell and Hebblethwaite.

Yes I remember Eastgate not being a very nice man.The headmaster before was hard but fair and had been there a long time and we'd got used to his ways, but Eastgate came in and changed thing immediately.Funny thing about Terry Hebbletwaite was years later I played rugby against him.He played for West Leeds and I played for Bramley Old Boys and he remembered me.

If I remember rightly Terry Hebblethwaite was the archetype gym teacher. Always in joggers and wearing a rugby shirt.
