Tankersley, as previously pointed out is in South Yorkshire, and it's close to Wortley, Sheffield, nothing to do with Wortley, Leeds. I guess you've been (understandably) misled by the annoying habit that some places have of sharing the same name as others.I was looking for a branch of Waitrose on its website, and it queried whether I wanted Leeds, Yorkshire, or Leeds, Kent.

H'mmmm. It's a strange one, then. Wonder if some 19th century clerk got it wrong and the felony's been compounded over the years. Sorry I can't help you further. I guess geneology must be pretty frustrating on occasion. Hope you do manage to make some sense of it all.

Weenie, I tried to post an answer for you but it got mixed up with another post. Tankersley is where your ancestor was born but in 1841 age 12 he is living in Wortley in Leeds, my gdad is down in 1891 as born in Lincolnshire but registered in Wortley Leeds.
