Michael does it again! This is the junction of Water Lane (running left to right,) Victoria Road (looking straight down,) Neville Street (behind the camera,) and Great Wilson Street (following the tram lines off to the left.) This means the Clarendon Hotel must be just out of shot to the right, I think. Picture from Leodis, and taken in 1934.

There was a parade of shops/houses on the corner of Water Lane roughly where Bridgewater Place now is that until about 15-20 years ago included a Barber’s I used to use. I think the row was demolished when Asda was built because to start with I think they used that wasteground over the road as an overflow car park then built an annexe on it as well before either RBS or HBOS took it over from them. I can’t remember anything resembling a pub in the row though. The barbers moved down Water Lane to roughly where the Leeds Brewery Pub is but I couldn’t say if it is still there as I haven’t noticed it and its about 10 years since I last used it.

Apparently, it shows a damaged sewer, caused by a burst water main, and was taken in September 1906, facing in the direction of Great Wilson Street. I'm afraid I can't find any of the pub itself. Where was the Clarendon exactly, Stutterdog? On an old map, a pub is shown at the end of Water Lane at the junction of Neville Street/Victoria Road/Great Wilson Street. Is that it? Kelly's 1908Clarendon 79 Victoria Road Michael I have to confess that the query re the Clarendon Hotel is a relatives.I dont know ,Si, if the one you have seen on your old map is the one but it certainly sounds like it could be.Uncle mick, your discovery in Kelly's Directory confirms this I think. My relative told me his Grt. Grt. Grandpa was the keeper of this hotel but I dont know when. The same person also was the landlord of the Lord Nelson at sometime in his life, possibly about 1920, he did not live at the pub but lodged in a property opposite. Thanks again for your help.

I can remember a John Smiths pub on the corner of water lane and victoria road, which I thought was the Victoria in the 1970's. It could of course have been the Clarendon before that.It was knocked down and became a car park for the new offices on the left along water lane that are still there. One day a great hole appeared in the car park, that was the pub cellar which had not been properly infilled.Bridgewater place stands on there today.
