Them's class photo's Dave - thanks.I lived in QH in the early 70's when a lot of them (and Marsh Lane) flats were student accommodation. The parties aound the complex back then are legendary! I was impressed by the flats' waste disposal system and the fact that our rubbish was burned to provide our central heating and heating for the drying rooms in the communal wash house. It was a great place to live and no need for bus or taxi to get you home, after a night out on the town - within staggering distance ;-)

Quarry Hill's 'chumping' gang was called the Quarry Killers. They used to raid our chumps. We daren't raid theirs!

There's two books that i know of about Quarry Hill flats - i find the flats fascinating even though i wasn't born until long after they were demolished. The books are the one previously mentioned which is by a photographer who got the chance to go into each flat as the residents moved out. It shows how the flats were left with one piece of furniture in, or with the old fashioned wallpaper, and the outside as it became run down bit by bit. The other book is by Alison Ravetz and is about the rise and decline of the flats - it has stories from the residents about life in the flats. Both very interesting. The Ravetz book is very warming and the other is quite sad.

Hi, just had to pull the Memento Mori book by Peter Mitchell from the book case, my dad gave me this a few years ago and its a fantasic book with great illustrations including blue prints, I think my dad got it from the Evening Post? The price was £13.95 in hard back that was in 1990.It was first published by Smith Settle Ltd, Ilkley Road, Otley, LS21 3JP.If you get chance buy it.

Farbank:             Just some more chat to add to that about Quarry Hill flats.Years ago my dad told me,[he would have been 106 yrs. now],That his first little earner was to help his grandad,[my Gt. grandad ], sell buckets of spring water to the residents of the houses where the flats were built. [Quarry Hill that was]. The water was obtained from a spring that was rented by his grandad. On land near where the current St.Aidans church on Roundhay Rd. stands. It was filled into what he described, as a huge barrel, mounted on cart wheels.Only there was no horse to pull it. Only him & grandad. It was 3d. a bucket, and used only for drinking. Also, a fact not many realised. Every chimney on the roof of the Flats, was painted with the number of the flat it corresponded to. This was after an early episode by the Leeds City Fire Brigade to extinguish a chimney fire, and put the hosereel down the wrong one. OOPS.!

What was on the Quarry Hill site between the old flats being knocked down and the new NHS HQ and West Yorks Play House being built?I searched Leodis but the only photos I could find were the old buildings being taken down and the new ones being put up, but nothing in between. I'm guessing it was a vacant lot. I originally lived in Leeds until 1985 but I was only 6 when we moved out so my memory is a bit hazy.
