The right turn on to New Briggate is the route for 100% of the northbound busses from Vicar Lane/the Bus Station as I don't know of any that travel on Regent Street. It is also a legitimate exit for private cars, although given that Vicar Lane (north bound) is part of the Bus Box (access only for private transport) I can't see why the west bound Eastgate isn't restricted for much of the day too. While it isn't, the legit traffic would justify those sort of timings, but of course there is one heck of a lot of traffic that isn't legit

One swallow does not a summer make but the Headrow was relatively clear from Cookridge Street to Albion Street when I passed on the way home this afternoon. Of course it might just be the problem has now moved to a 3rd location (it wasn't bak to Boar Lane, at least tonight)

Or is that too much like common sense?

I went to town this morning (around 1000am) on the bus and it was stood still, solid, from the Town Hall to Eastgate. returning about 2.00pm from Infirmary Street, buses were unable to turn right from Park Row top into the Headrow, causing my bus to be stuck behind them while waitng to turn left to the Town Hall stop.

Latest I've noticed is backing-up down to the Town Hall now. Come along East Parade in the righthand lane and go no where when the lights change - either the odd car turning right which can't or, of course something straggling across the junction in the Yellow box.

During those twelve years the Leeds, Bradford, Halifax/Todmorden and Huddersfield municipal undertakings were formed into "Metro" and the Head Office of the new outfit was in Wakefield where, cynically and oddly enough, they hadn't a bus or a service at all. This was initially resolved by buying out W.R. & P. Bingley of Kinsley thereby procuring established bus sevices and premises in the Wakefield Council area.

I noticed last night while counting the 10 taxis parked up in the rank at the bus station that the rank is actually only for 4 cars. While the entire lay-by is marked out with a dotted yellow line with taxis written 3 times along its full length it would appear the back end is reserved for “dropping off and picking up” as per another sign towards the middle. The 10th taxi was actually parked on the pavement on the other side of the open market access but could easily have fitted in the layby with a little more considerate parking by the previous 9. Quite why 10 taxis were required at the Bus Station at about 9.45 is another matter unless they were waiting for people about to exit the Playhouse. This morning I walked up the Headrow from Eastgate to Briggate and viewed what presumably is the cause of chaos in the evenings. A taxi rank for 20+ cabs which would effectively render that stretch of the Headrow as single lane as soon as one cab is parked up. The problem then presumably lies that as soon as there is more than a bus to turn right it blocks all traffic going straight on to Eastgate. Because of the road layout the straight on would get a much longer green light than the right filter but it is rendered useless if a combination of right turning traffic and taxis on rank block progress. This problem will also have been exacerbated by Wirst’s decision just over a year ago to run most of its services via Vicar Lane and Kirkgate and in most cases missing the Bus Station rather than the previous Eastgate route into the bus station.
