When I was a student in Newcastle more years ago than I care to remember the Fenwick's display one Christmas was scenes from fairy tales with lifesize moving figures, including a handsome prince bending a bit over-vigorously to wake Sleeping Beauty with a kiss - by January both their noses had worn away completely. Hi Leedslily, were you at the Uni or the Poly? I was there '79 - '81.Nothing to do with Christmas (or Leeds, for that matter) but your Sleeping Beauty story reminds me of a re-edited telly ad I once saw at Newcastle Poly, for a famous teasmaid company. A knight in armour fights his way through dragons and over-size brambles to reach a distant castle. He charges across the drawbridge, and up the tower's stairs. Arriving at Sleeping Beauty's bedside, he removes his helmet and kneels to kiss her. Just at that moment, the teasmaid alarm goes off, and she awakens. Cut to them both sat on the edge of the bed sipping tea. The Beauty turns to the knight, and says, "So, what do you think of my Gobblin, then?" He splutters into his tea...honestly, it really existed!

Those were the days! I loved living up there - maybe because Newcastle is a bit similar to Leeds - friendly people, plenty going on etc. And it was close enough to home to take the washing back to mum every now and again, but far enough away to be safe from unexpected parental visits!I think I remember that ad too - or maybe I just heard the punchline somewhere else! ;-)

I also enjoyed living up there, but I have Geordie relatives, so I'm a bit biased.I had a look on You Tube and the ad is there, but is missing the final scene - apparently it was filmed and added on the end as a joke, but in some areas went out in it's full length version! Time and disintegrating memory seem to have added the dragons and suit of armour, but otherwise it's pretty much the same!

Compulsory I believe. Take the slow train from Leeds to Sheffield via Barnsley on a Friday or Saturday evening and try and stop 'Duelling Banjos' playing in your head as the denizens of Wath head for the bright lights of Rawmarsh.

After conspicuously not having one last year, Leeds Station has A Christmas this year but it looks like it is sponsored by Ebay from the advertising hoardings surrounding it. It's outside Wetherspoons.

Presumably its about 5 weeks before they are "officially" switched on but who wants to guess on which z-list celeb will do it! 364 days on, I believe I saw some in Greek Street this morning. No info here http://www.festiveleeds.com/leedslights/ yet though.

Noticed them up at Kirkstall junction on my way into work today, they must have been busy over the weekend.Anyone remember the year someone torched the christmas tree in city square? It had been looking a bit dry for a week or so, oh and btw it wasn't me.
