Just before the sign the inside of two lanes splits into the one the sign indicates is a left turn only lane and another that is at this stage straight on this shows it isn't a left turn only Try driving down Merrion Street for that one - middle lane = Loop Road only, left lane A61/North Street. Make your turn from this lane and 9 times out of 10 some ignorant numpty in the middle lane will try to side-swipe you in their careless belief that they can change lanes go up Noth street from there. Persons of perhaps doubtful parentage     It happens nearly every time and im not exaggerating. To my recollection ive seen four bumps there and ive nearly been hit myself a few times, its only because i know the road and i drop back a little so as to let the muppets have there way lol

The annoying thing about the Hunslet junction is that it is resonably easily remedied. Instead of the inside lane splitting into two with bot lanes carrying straight on make the middle lane split into two. The inner split continues straight on with the dedicated inner lane and the outer split becomes the inner lane on turning into SAR along with a dedicated outside lane.Cue the catchphrase of a meerkat

Correct you do have your back to Wakefield and are facing almost due North so you are correct in questioning the sign sending you West for Wakefield. I did for many years believe that the A61 from Stourton gyratory went down to Thwaite Gate and then on Hunslet Low Road. However when I started “lobbying” LCC to make the lane changes suggested above, which was before funding for LIRR7 was even approved, I discovered that is actually the A639 (Pontefract Road). At some point, presumably when the A61 was rerouted onto South Accommodation Road on completion of LIRR6 Hunslet Distributor Road between what is now M621 Junction 4 (and was probably M1 junction 46) and Hunslet Road was also designated the A61. Quite how Stourton gyratory to M621 junction 4 is achieved on the A61 other then it being doubled up with the M621 is beyond me and the author of this http://www.sabre-roads.org.uk/wiki/inde ... 28A6120.29 (copy and paste because the link breaks)
