Here's a drawing of the layout of the factory when built.

Some of the buildings on that picture, around where the number '10c' is, are still there, and others have only been demolished fairly recently.

I know for example it was supposed to be an ordanence factory, it shut down at the end of the second world war and reopened for the Korean war, but unlike the other ROC sites which have a lot of information available, histories etc, this one is zip. It isn't even on any maps until the 1970's, just appearing as a field! Did this place have some special significance hidden away in military records? It was the norm that these places did not appear on maps for obvious reasons and until hostilities became less of a consequence, Barnbow in East Leeds was a non-entity in this respect for long enough. The link from electricaldave says 18 000 people worked at Thorpe Arc, far more than at Barnbow but I have vivid memories of the endless perocession of people and bikes travelling away from there down Austhorpe Road every evening, which to me was an amazing number of people just coming from nowhere.
