OK, so it's hardly one of the architectural gems of Leeds, but you could have knocked me down with a feather when I heard that Crown Point shopping centre is 20 years old this month! How old do I feel now..? I can remember when it were nowt but a derelict former railway yard, as far as t'eye could see.

I don't know why it does that with certain flickr pages. It's a good picture if you can view it though!

Yup for some reason SL's programme just doesn't recognise @ in a link at terminates when it sees it - works ordinarily. Solution is to give yourselve a nick-name in Flickr instead of being just a numberDoes work if you paste (or type) it in though. Never fails to amaze me how much of town was railway in days gone by.(btw - pool is fenced off, catr park closes tomorow, most of the asbestos out and big hammer expected anytime).

I think Crown Point would be massively enhanced by a "spine" of smaller shops / covered stalls up the middle of the carpark. I've always wondered why this has always been well used and the Tulip Retail Park has tumble weeds rolling around the car park.

Close proximity to town as opposed to out of the way? (I discovered it by accident)The retailers that are on site? The variety of retailers? (How many units at Tulip, I've only been once and can't for the life of me think why I went)

I think that Tulip was built with the hope of attracting traffic off the motorway junction, except anything that does come off the M621 there goes straight up the dual carriageway towards town. And of course most traffic for Leeds and routes east / north exits at the next junction. This is a situation that can't have been helped by the months of roadworks on the distributor road and the fact now that virtually all outbound traffic is directed straight onto the motorway. The Range is about the only store there that warrants anything other than very infrequent visits and they've been unfortunate that many of the big retailers who have set up there have subsequently folded. On the upside there I've never had any trouble finding a parking place, something that certainly can't be said for Crown Point! So no passing trade, not much to attract people in and no real public transport links. It really is up against it. Like Phil and Kirsty keep telling us, it's all about "Location, Location, Location"Whereas at Crown Point there are a lot of big names, it's within walking distance of the city centre and it's passed by goodness knows how many bus routes heading in and out of the city centre.

Yeah I agree with all you both say and i think the road lay out is the most salient point. Has anyone ever walked to Crown Point from Town? I haven't. That Range is pretty weaird, when we've been we've commented how cool a shop it is but strangely never bought anything from there. One suspects maybe is is just one too many retail park and there is no demand for a Division 2 park.
