The Bank, old bank etc was actually properly titled The Bank Wine Bar, and yes you did have to go downstairs. The manager's name was Tony who came from Sutton Coalfield, and it was owned by a company based in Birmingham or that general area. They also owned a club called Park Avenue in Sutton Coalfield. No comment on the lock ins though.

Hi everyone,So far as relates to the 'Old Bank Club', this was a 'club' (pub) which was situated in an old building that used to be a working men's club. I seem to remember it becoming the Old Bank Club in the early 1970's. The 'club' was managed by Keiron Richardson who moved there after he had been the manager at the Wykebeck pub in Selby Road. It was a real den of iniquity and was frequented mainly by local criminals. The area was known as Richmond Hill and also Cavalier Hill. The Old Bank Club was situated on either Ellerby Road or Richmond Street. It was not far from the Cavalier Inn on Ellerby Road.'The Bank' was a wine bar which opened up near to the Bank of England on Park Row/South Parade. Here are some links for the Old Bank Club:http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... 4869631Ian

I remember the Ace of Clubs on Woodhouse Lane, had my "Stag Night" in there. I'm pretty sure Lita Rosa was the turn that night, quite a big name in her day. We must have been making a racket 'cos she stopped singing and started berating us! Which was fair comment.

" The 'club' was managed by Keiron Richardson who moved there after he had been the manager at the Wykebeck pub in Selby Road. It was a real den of iniquity and was frequented mainly by local criminals."Was open until about 85 or 86, though i recall it being in the ownership of a quite large (if always pleasant with me) Irish woman who used to get sozzled in the Cavalier before opening her own club. Don't remember much else about her, except that she had a grown up daughter who used to wear her hair in a bun with thin plaits coming out of it so she looked like she had a squid stuck to her head.Fight practically guarenteed every night. There used to be some real characters went in there, there was an old woman called Violet Dooley, who only had one eye, reputedly lost the other one in a fight, who'd try to get the staff to ring her a taxi and run around calling "Diamond for Dooley". Some guy called Freddy who used to get [edited for content] and think he was a circus performer and do somersaults over the bar, and there was this nutter who called himself Rambo who'd go nuts and turn over the pool table or rip the payphone off of the wall. I think that may have been the only time they ever called the police!
Evil and ambition scatter in the the darkness, leaving behind dubious rumors to fly in public. To the next world, I commit thee.
