It was Ernie Shackelton who ran "The Junction" in the 70's. I think after he finished there he purchased the "Mullberry" on Hunslet Road.Happy days at the "Junction" Daz Darwell been the DJ and lifting beer tables with his teeth.     After all "Shacks" pub life he went to become a hospital porter.

I used to go in the Mulberry quite a bit in the 80's after work and we got to know Ernie a bit. I never knew he once had the Junction. Didn't he play Rugby for Hunslet at one time ??
there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

It seems there was tradition of Hunslet RL players taking Melbourne Pubs when they retired from playing. Maybe there was a connection on the board of the club.My Dad was most upset by Mr. Hitler cos he was playing for Hunslet just before the war and getting wounded cost him his career and his pub! What was the little pub back of Hunslet Parish Church, it only had a beer and cider licence, part of the quaint old licensing laws we once had. Was it the Black Dog or something similar, is it still standing?

I believe the Black horse closed in the later half of the 1970s to make way for the Penny Hill

There were "lily livered" crews who would drive past, early, and risk the sack sooner than face the roaring crowds for Belle Isle and Middleton.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.
