Down near the river....

I am an avid kayaker, and as such, have paddled many stretches of the River Aire and have seen things from a perspective most wouldn't.On one particular stretch, near Newlay Weir (road access available from A65 New Roadside down Newlay Lane, or from Leeds & Bradford Road down Pollard lane), I have noticed a structure in the woods (highlighted on the attached map). It looked quite eerie, abandoned, and luring. There was the remnants of old stone entrance.I once went down on my scooter a few years back, but it was dark, and I got a wee bit scared of what or who I may find. I haven't been back since. Any ideas and what it is, if it's still there?Be noted, if anyone goes down there to look based on what i've said here, the bridge over the river where Pollard Lane and Newlay Lane meet is not accessible by car, it has been closed to vehicles for years now, so go in and back out one way or t'other. Limited parking!

You've found the old Quarry @ Bramley Fall Wood.There's plenty more stone structures round there.

There was loads of old ruins in lower Bramley Fall Woods. It was a stone Quarry Scandy.. Apparently excellent quality material some of which found it's way to building our very own town hall so i've read.

I dont believe that the area is the old quarry but it is the old putty works and lies between the canal and the river just over from the Abbey Public house.The quarry is out of shot on this photo as it lies further up towards Bramley. Allegedly the quarried stone from Bramley Fall was used to build Kirkstall Abbey,London Bridge ( the one that's in Arizona) and was also used in the construction of the Houses of Parliament

i'm more inclinded to believe it might be the puttyworks.The wooded area highlighted is no where near big enough to hos a quarry.The building I refer to is indeed on the small stretch of road between the bridges of the canal and the river, just by the pub.Any advances on the old putty works?? Presumably if it is this, they made putty, as in the stuff that holds your windows in place!?

Me and my friends have spent many a day down where you are on about next to the river. All i know is that its was some kind of factory / mill. Could well have been a puttyworks im not sure! I know that you could access the factory which was where the new houses are now from there.But believe me your not missing anything from going and exploring there. Its very dirty, ive found needles there before. Alot of junkies go chill out there and its covered in graffiti.A few months back I saw workmen there with the laser landmarker things maybe possibly sizing it up for further development? The company which has knocked down the old factory behind the abbey has aquired this land...

im sure the stone for the houses of parliament came from a quarry at brotherton - theres a cutting dug to the river for the barges to laod up. could be wrong like...
