There are only 10 types of people in the world -those who understand binary, and those that don't.

Can someone tell me how places like Winstons get away with trading blatantly as a knocking shop? Are th epolice just happy to have it contained largely in one place?
Ravioli, ravioli followed by ravioli. I happen to like ravioli.

Prostitution still isn't illegal, and never has been. What is illegal is soliciting and kerb crawling. Winston's, or Churchill's on Dewsbury Road, don't do either. I know the boss of Churchill's and indeed did some web work for the place a couple of years ago, and it's not even illegal to book 'escorts' online: as with lap dancing, what the dancer/escort and punter agree to after the introduction is entirely up to them. The city and the police do occasionally have a clampdown, and I believe did so about nine months ago, and can raid properties on the grounds of public nuisance or the various charges associated with prostitution, such as living on immoral earnings, and I think Churchill's was shut for a bit, which may or may not be on a tacit agreement with the police. However, their official status is as escort clubs and as long as they meet the general standards for such clubs they can stay in business.

I know the one up Dewsbury Road has been busted and shut down, then it re-opened as Churchills. *raises eyes to ceiling* (Winstons to Churchills who are they trying to kid?) I think the "massage parlours" do get raided every now and then. Maybe it is like you said keep it all in one place. I suppose that's why the cops let the Snakepit stay open in the 70's. If they were after anyone for any crime they would possibly find them in there.
Sit thissen dahn an' tell us abaht it.

On my drive to work until quite recently I regularly used to see girls 'working' around Holbeck Moor and at the top end (Springwell Road area) of Water Lane - a sad sight, as most of them looked really young but also completely wasted, and personally I can't think of a much less appealing way to earn a living at 8 o'clock on a chilly winter morning.Don't see them so often now - I think there was a police clampdown a while ago, probably part of the 'gentrification' of the edge of Holbeck into Holbeck Urban Village.

I think these days, it's more a case of earning their next fix rather than a living so your comment about being wasted is right. It's also well reported that the health risks to those partaking of their services are far greater than was once the case because of this and the results could well be devasting to say the least.Phill had an interesting shot on here some time ago from unexpected observations whilst investigation old track of Marshall Street a while back! The activity in that area/Holbeck/Beeston is a direct result of trying to stamp it out in particular in Chapeltown years ago proving perhaps that the Oldest Profession will not go away, whatever peoples ideals, it will just move home and will likely do so again before long.

some of the newish 'bargain' hotels of leeds, much loved of hen and stag parties are turning into unofficial 21st century knocking shops. some of the girls are getting rooms by the night to take their customers, which at least is a bit safer for them...not saying which hotels though as i don't want to be sued, lol.it's not just girls either, sadly water lane is also a red light district for males too, usually underage one who are absent from their childrens/foster home

The other night i went up my street and saw a red light on in the window of one of the houses. Figured it was prob. just some studie moved in with their mood lighting, but then tonight i went past again and a young woman is sat in the window reading a book, lit up by the red light on the windowsill.I guess it could just be a young woman who likes reading and all the lights have gone in her house except that one :~
