Saved again by Brandy's lightning processing service for which thanks very much indeed This picture is obviously very near the end of the reign of the North - South tram routes as the new bus is on one of the replacement services. The destination blinds read :-DEWSBURY ROAD     Meadow Lane2     Leeds Bridge    Chapeltown Road. This enormous busy and complex "figure of eight" cross city network served Chapeltown, Moortown, Roundhay, Harehills, City, Hunslet, Belle Isle, Middleton and Dewsbury Road.Despite all these points it was universally known by the staff as "Dewsbury Road" and this reference persisted into the bus days and survives even today. To say the network was always busy is a massive understatement, and I've had some "beatings" on there myself, both as a conductor and as a driver Just one example of how hard it was - the running time from Swan Junction to Briggarte (via Hunslet Road proper and Tetley's) was 7 minutes including busy loading and unloading, particularly in Briggate. Aye......... "Dewsbury Road" was not for the faint hearted, especially if you had one of the self opinionated "fast crews" in front of you - for "fast crew" read "time pinching, red light running , gearbox wrecking work dodgers."

(me being the idiot that put it up that is )     .............................................................................Yes I am on Internet Explorer, and yes thanks a lot I did print out and follow your perfectly clear guide on the procedure. I'm beginning to wonder if there's some other fault at this end, as I used to post the pictures without any trouble using exactly the same method. Will have another go at sorting it when I have time, and thanks again for your help and thanks to Brandy for his excellent "ready in ten minutes" processing service

POACHED THIS FROM THE "RAILWAY TUNNEL" THREAD - I hope this is in order .......................................................................................................... # Posted on: 15-Aug-2007 19:37:37.    Quote Phill_d wrote: I don't know about the Richardshaw tram crash-But there was one @ Oakwood when the tramcar ran all the way from Roundhay park gates with no one onboard & came to grief on the bend near the Oakwood clock. roundhegian wrote :-"The runaway started at Oakwood Clock and the tram ran about 150 yards towards Harehills . Had the runaway begun at Roundhay Park the tram would have stopped at some point on the reserved track along Princes Avenue because there was a slight upward gradient between the tram and coach parking area and the tram-stop halfway along Princess Avenue .There is a photograph in volume three of Jim Soper's " Leeds Transport " roundhegian " Top ........................................................................................................Sorry roundhegian - but the Feltham number 507 DID run away from Roundhay Park (4th September 1952) and careered all the way to Oakwood Shops where it smashed into citybound number 92 before mounting the pavement. The driver had left the car without applying the parking brake and the conductor , who could and should have applied the emergency brake, is said to have jumped off in panic. At Oakwood the driver and conductor of the "victim" tram 92 were knocked unconscious as the tram was shunted from the stop at high speed - it was stopped by a truly heroic passenger at Gipton Wood. That dozens of passengers and bystanders were not killed is nothing short of a miracle !!

I don't remember the Rounday incident (I'd be 5 at the time) But I certainly remember my uncle who worked at Ingle's Tannery and missed the tram that morning telling me about this:"In 1923, a runaway tram ran down Churwell Hill and ended in tragedy. Six people were killed and 35 injured when the brakes failed and the tram crashed into a field wall at Cottingley.[1]"http://www.any-village.com/UK/England/W ... home.aspxI believe this incident may have been one of the reasons that Leeds trams stopped coming to Morley. When I was a kid the lines ran out fairly abruptly outside Elland Road Stadium (dog track)

While this post will not add anything new to the thread, I would say that I discovered the Dewi photos some time ago and, to my surprise, on one of the photos of a Feltham at Crossgates Terminus, there is a man passing behind the tram, with the old Travellers in the background, who I swear is my father.
