Some years ago, the Council decided that to have a major facility in the centre of the City was not the way to go and rather than prop up the failing International Pool, a decision was made to build a new pool in Hunslet. Apparently this would be much easier for people to get to and better serve the poupulous at large, nobody wanting to use the city centre site it was said, except for competitions. The magnificent new pool was completed and opened, though not without problems and the International Pool closed. Things change. It was only then, some years after the proposals came into being, that the people working in the town did want to swim during the day and that people did travel in too.The result, reported I think it was, in the YEP, was that 'facility time' was to be bought from the University for public use.And now the University recognises the need for a new facility - within the city centre!

Not really the City Centre to be pedantic even if only slightly further out than the International was. I know of people who get the bus from the Bus Station, Infirmary Street and even Albion Street to the Fenton or the Parkinson building who work in that vicinity. To be fair the bus service is more regular and slightly quicker than the one to John Charles.

Quite so - the point I was trying to make was that there is a need for (local and) a more central facility, contrary to the original thoughts.I recall an arrangement was sought to provide something closer to town when public demand made it clear there was a demand after all.
