Mention of the animated 'opening curtains' sign at the City Varieties reminded me that the Dock Green had an animated sign. It lit up in sequence, if I remember correctly. Three words in red [?].DOCK. GREEN. INN. One after the other then the whole lot together. Also, I'm sure there were some illuminated arrows somewhere in town pointing one down an alleyway toward some bar or other. This was long before the current fashion of flashing lights everywhere.'In town'. Now there's a phrase. Did your Mam go 'in town' on Saturday? Did you? 'Where's your Mam?' 'Gone in town'. I've never come across that phrase outside Leeds. A city, not a town.

Reminds me of when I drove for Samuel Ledgard's from King Street to Ilkley - our terminus was just above the Metropole Hotel (King Street was two way then) and I was working with a very dignified elderly gent who'd fallen on hard times and would really have been far more suited to being a "Jeeves" butler than a bus conductor. We were standing outside the bus one Saturday evening when a noisy gang of professional ladies (not a brief case in sight) approached and their raucous leader bellowed out "DER YER GO PAST 'ARE 'N 'OUNDS LUV??" After a moment's thought, and another deep drag on his Capstan Full Strength untipped, dear old Howard solemnly replied "YES, MADAM, AND WE'VE BEEN KNOWN TO STOP THERE TOO GIVEN ADEQUATE NOTICE !!."
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.
