One of the shops nearest to the Town Hall end of The Headrow was a showroom for the SKF roller bearing company - a very well respected make in engineering circles. Some of the upstairs offices at the eastern (top) end were occupied by Leeds City Council Planning Department.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

Here is a good one courtesy of Leodis. You can see how Upper Fountain Street has been removed now ant eh raised walkway into the light from Albion Street covers most of the lower part of the back of the old perm. building.

Valentines fair used to be where Milennium Square is now, used to be a bit of waste ground next to the Cuthbert Broderick and part of it was there. I've got to admit, I'm slightly too young to really have remembered or taken notice of what was there before the bulk of the light was built. I do remember walking and parking on Fountain Street, and there were a load of bikes always parked under the Arch near where Bagel Nash is now....

And no sign of the lower street on old maps back to 1854.

I remember as a kid when I used to wait for the bus on the Headrow that there was a "tat" shop somewhere around where Ark(?) is now. I can't remember what the other shops were on the front or what the rest of the building was used for. I am 25 now so I won't remember it in its hey day but just before it became The Light... even then I don't remember much of it! I think you'll find that the 'Tat' shop was called 'The Stop and Shop'!Very cheap but mainly rubbish! Brollies for 99p which when you pressed the release button, didn't just spring open but the whole'cover and ribs shot 6ft in the air!We also bought a reel to reel tape recorder for about £3.for our14 yr old son's birthdayIt was fine for speech but if he tried to record owt on TOTPIt sounded like an Iraqi revivalist Meeting! No cinc at all!We learn the hard way and son not best pleased!Apart from that shop. I seem to remember that the upper floorsof that building were a solicitors and a medical inspectionsuite for people on long term sick (to check for skivers!)Hope that helps,Rob? I find it hard to recall what was therebefore The LightArry In addition to those already mentioned. At various and sundry times I remember on that frontage :The Electricity Board Offices and Showrooms.A Greek Cypriot coffee bar.The Scout and Guide shop.A Craft shopThe rather strange roller bearing emporium already mentionedA "Gestetner" copier / duplicator outlet. (Maybe)An Austicks specialist bookshop. These memories may be up to 50 years apart, and could be wrong altogether

We wanted to make Leeds a better place for the future - but we're losing it. The tide is going out beneath our feet.
