I remember 1963. It froze from Christmas until March. 1979 was a pretty bad and long winter. Frequent heavy snow, which would disipate only to return a week or so later. I remember it snowing the first week of May. I'd taken the week off to paint my house and it soddin' well snowed I also remember the traffic chaos that night in 1995 when the weather men got the timing of the snow wrong by 12 hours and Leeds was gridlocked. Took me 90 minutes to get from Wigan to Gildersome via M62 and a further three hours to get to Morley!

I got the bus at the bottom of Cardigan Road, 2 hours later I got off at the Town Hall and walked the rest of the way.

In trying to pinpoint the snowy winters I remembered from the 50’s and 60s I found the snow records and comments on the following website most usefulhttp://www.napier.eclipse.co.uk/weather/bonacina.htmlWinters recorded as VERY SNOWY were 46/4762/6378/79There was a cluster of above average snowy winters in the mid 50s (Which are the ones I remember) :54/5555/5657/58And in the mid-late 60’s65/6668/6969/70
It used to be said that the statue of the Black Prince had been placed in City Square , near the station, pointing South to tell all the southerners who've just got off the train to b****r off back down south!

There are only 10 types of people in the world -those who understand binary, and those that don't.

Oldskool sledging. http://www.lovelylingfield.com/st_sledges.htm My brother in law made a sledge for my two nephews following the instructions from a Blue Peter annual. He must have got confused with the measurements somewhere along the way as it ended up so big the two little lads couldn't move it let alone drag it to the top of a hill.It would have seated six in comfort! 20 odd years later whenever DIY is mentioned the "Blue peter sledge" rears it's head.1979 was a memorable snowy winter for me as I got married in Jan of that year and I'm barely visible on the photos in my white dress among huge snow drifts.
