Out and about in the Wakefield area last Saturday and Sunday we took a detour in Rothwell and found some old rail wagons in a field. We stopped to photograph them when the old boy who owned the horses comes along and starts to talk to us,We got on about the old rail lines around the area, when suddenly he says 'you see that there' and points out to this lump of rubble. That's Rothwell castle is that. It's a bloody nuisance cos the kids are always climbing on it.I took a few photos of it and looked it up on the net afterwards because i've never heard of it.I must admit you'd never find or know the place was there normally.I found it to be one of the saddest ruins of a building ever.Apparently it is listed too.A pic and some history is here http://www.castleuk.net/castle_lists_no ... castle.htm
My flickr pictures are herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/Because lunacy was the influence for an album. It goes without saying that an album about lunacy will breed a lunatics obsessions with an album - The Dark side of the moon!

Never really thought about the origins (but then wa take alot for granted don't we?)Have a look at this, 'well' is not too far out!http://home.iprimus.com.au/crothwell/namehist.html

I hadn't though much of it either despite starting to visit it "well" over 30 years ago when my Uncle moved there. The origin of the name in your link makes sense. The River Dolphin(covered on a previous thread if IRC) is not much more than a stream that runs through the full length of Rothwell to Oulton and there is plenty of evidence of Woods that may well have extended much further all around the vicinity.

To the best of my knowledge, there were three major wells, Colley Well which was on Park Lane, opposite 24, Church Well which was to the right of the old Corn Mill (originally Wood Lane ran straight down instead of turning off to the right and forded the beck) and last but not least the Sterroid Well which I was always told was supposed to have had healing properties. This was found over on the pastures near to where the Haigh Beck joins Rothwell Beck (or the River Dolphin!) Unfortunately no Roth well that I can find.I was always under the impression that Rothwell was a corruption of Rodill, hence Rodillian School and the use of the name Rodill amongst the local natives. I must confess to climbing the remains of the castle on many occasions in my youth, and the pit hills that used to be there were a regular adventure playground.
