The 1 was added to most dialling codes with phONEday in 1995, so the areas outside Leeds became Wakefield: 01924, Barnsley: 01223, York, 01904, Wharfedale: 01943, etc but Leeds (finally) got a geographical number (0113) which only sort of mapped to the existing exchanges. I remember experimenting with 0191 numbers in Newcastle when they were introduced in the late 80s and finding that, rather disappointingly, the last four figures in a number didn't allow local calls from the same nominal exchange.

In addition to Leeds (0113) there is Sheffield (0114) Nottingham (0115) Leicester (0116) Bristol (0117) Reading (0118 ) All are regional codes.

The BT Building at Sovereign Street is purely Admin, there's no Telephone Exchange Infra there, it's a general office. It does host some Internal Project Development Comms but BT's main IT Functions are in the restricted Data Centre's, there are a number of them acrross the UK.There's nothing interesting under 1 Sov St just Store rooms and a carparkThe Biggest exchange in Leeds would be West Gate, from what I know most of the city is fed from Westgate or Basinghall.The NHS Project was originally housed at an ex BT building on Britania Street opposite the old Royal Mail building, that team are now located in Sov St.

I remember, must be over thirty years ago going there to buy Yellow Pages for all the telephone areas in Lancashire and Yorkshire, which was the area I was covering as a sales rep at the time.

Yup, we stood t work and watched it come down - only to be replaced with a remarkabley similar replica structure just a few years ago!
