As i may have a bit of an advantage here as i have worked for the GPO,BT and now openreach for the past 30 years you would be suprised how many buildings/exchanges that are in the city and surrounds.Just to anawer a previous poster regarding adsl it is dependent on distance from the exchange but it is down to vaying factors as to what speed you can gain from your line and it is not all down to distance from the exchangeSome exchanges in the area ADELARMLEYARTHINGTON(POOL) REALLYBARWICK IN ELMETECHAPLETOWNCROSSGATESDRIGHLINGTONGARFORTHHAREHILLSHAREWOODHEADINGLEYHORSFORTHHUNSLETLEEDS(CENTRE)MOORTOWNMORLEYPUDSEYRAWDONROTHWELLSEACROFTTHORNERThere are also some old buildings that have been exchanges and have now got a new lease of life CHAPLETOWN old exchange is now offices and is just off harrogate Road at the end of Mexborough Grove ROUNDHAY EXCHANGE    this is at the junction of Devonshire ave/cresDRIGHLINGTON WAS AT THE BOTTOM OF SPRING GARDENS These are the exchanges

Thinking we can tell exactly who has it tyke bhoy - a few it seems assuming all the multiple posts arise from the error message! Strange it didn't do these things before the last big wobble did it? Wonder if the fix changed another bit of code.

Unfortunately some of us don't have the luxury of choosing some of the browsers we use some of the time.

There's an article here that might interest you, seems caution is still the watch word if you want to be sure of continuing 'normal service' for browsing generally and the issues are resulting in a beta 3 release.http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/01/07 ... 8_blocker/

Thought this thread might be a bit too naff when I started it but plenty of people seem to be interested.A point I tried to make in the original post has not been picked up.The use of CENTRAL in the ledgard/nelson advert.I have never known the use of names as a prefix to numbers in Leeds before.Any one know a lttle bit more please??

The same mnemonic system would have applied in Leeds as elsewhere so I *think* the number would have eventually been Central (2) 3730. As Leeds has been a big city for a long time I would guess that the phone service started with a number of exchanges and that the city has had five figure numbers for quite a while. You can roughly work out where they were and the area they covered from the third digit of a modern phone number without the dialling code. The sixth (second) digit was added in most of the country sometime in the 70s and direct dial added a 2 and changed the dialling code from 0532 to 0113 in 1992. Someone will know better no doubt. If you want to have a look at how the old mechanical phone systems worked have a look here: http://www.seg.co.uk/telecomm/ and if you want your eyes to cross slightly, here's Clive Feather's description of how the national network worked in 2000: http://www.davros.org/phones/btnetwork.html

The code change was just a little later simon, April 95. We changed all 600 of our office phone numbers at the same time - then did it all again a few years later - wonderful weekends of reprogramming the pbx they were! You know that extra '2' still causes problems when people add it to the dialling code and then dial the local number.Dial 0113 228xxxx for example, and thats what you'll get but someone wanting (Leeds) 283xxxx using 01132 gets - 228xxxx instead.Bet it's fun now we have Leeds numbers starting with a 3 as well as a 2!
