Also being here since day, very close to 1, and she WAS banned! I still ask the questions Why? However, keep getting told "leave it" Seems a long time ago now and even I was dragged into it when poster started "having a go" at the site I administrate. I quietly posted all concerned and that stopped, but the bannns were in place and have been since. Both frequent a similar site to this now. Sorry to take it off track..

Blakey, Blackburn Hall was never a Cinema, the building prior to it being built was the Empire. Whilst I only have my old maps to go on, it always being Blackburn Hall in my lifetime, the 2500 series maps show the outline of the building which whilst being extended, still has the same footprint as the original cinema. If you look at the ariel photos of the building, you can compare the original outlines and the extensions, also, whilst it is a bit of a presumption, there is a picture on Leodis showing the re-opening of the Blackburn Hall, which I took to be the conversion of the Empire to Blackburn Hall. The 54 & 58 maps show it as the Empire Ballroom.. Also if my memory serves me right, you could see where the camera used to project from on the wall, the last time I went in there was when the local rock groups played there in the early 80's Unfortunatly I can't post my maps to show you what I mean. Ads you could be right there, I will consult some older friends to see if that was the case. The frontage is 50's brick as are some bits addedd on the side, I had always assumed the whole thing was rebuilt. Not sure now you say that. I'll be that local rock group in the arly 80's was Argon. They also had a Friday night disco but it clashed with similar ones at the Windmill and Parish Hall too. Don't forget Python! I remember a Monday night disco that was very mods v rockers and lads from other areas coming down and causing trouble. Yes happy days!

Don't forget Python, the Royds alternative to Argon I wonder where they all are now. perhaps there should be a 30th(ish) reunion of them all!. I remember the friday discos at hte parish centre well, but recall the Blackburn Hall ones as being a year or two before this and on a Monday. Very mods v rockers, with lads from other areas coming down to cause trouble. I seem to remember it got kicked into touch because of the fighting

I watched the Regal being demolished. I worked in Harehills for a while almost opposite the Harehills Cinema and not very far from the Clock. My favourite was the News Theatre under a corner of the Queens Hotel in City Square. Lots of cartoons!!All distant memories now. Here's the Ritz at Crossgates in all its glory. Spent a large part of my youth either in it or hanging around outside it, either just loitering or selling Green Finals for Arthur Taylor. Danced in its aisle to Rock Around the Clock. Saw live local rock group competitions there, one group called the Black Panthers.

It used to be said that the statue of the Black Prince had been placed in City Square , near the station, pointing South to tell all the southerners who've just got off the train to b****r off back down south!

The red neon sign is still on the Lyric building to this day - a very poignant reminder of very happy and simpler times If you listen carefully you can still hear the majestic ex London Feltham trams climbing powerfully up Tong Road to New Inn or Whingate - well I can, but then I am happily "batty." .    I couldn't put a date on it, but the sign was sometimes lit up many many years after the cinema closed, and who knows it may possibly still be in working order ??
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.
