City Centre Leeds are the part of the Council's City Development Department who look after the retail trade in the city centre. I work for Arts&Events, who do stuff all over the city, but Arts stuff.I have difficulty explaining to my bosses why Secret Leeds & the Arts are connected. This is possibly because I have difficulty explaining it to myself! Love of history, ownership of place... that kind of thing. I don't really think anyone needs to Explain Secret Leeds to anyone. It should be clear to your Lords and Masters that the success, popularity and wide reaching appeal of this initiative speaks volumes in itself

tyke bhoy wrote: BTW the celebrate Leeds 2007 link on the left hand side seems to have let the domain name lapse without renewing and is now an advertising/search site for the hosts and not Celebrating Leeds at all Only just spotted this tyke bhoy and see it's still out. A shame the celebration was short lived - let's hope the same fate doesn't befll SL.

So who actually switched the lights on then? Simon boy band person? Nil desperandum. Up here there was Jill Halfpenny apparently. At least she's some connection with the city. In Newcastle there is the equivalent of Lewis's in 'Fenwick's window', an annual institution. To which every child is compulsorily marched. My colleague's son sang on last year's Fenwick's song - get this - recorded professionally in......Barnsley. Don't ask my why. I know not.

I know of at least two cheap but well equipped studios in the Barnsley area: Jive Bunny's place is in the Dearne Valley and I'm fairly sure that at least one of Kylie's hits was recorded in the town, although I know not whether the plucky antipodean sex-pot has sampled a Barnsley Chop in pursuit of her art.Rotherham and Barnsley and the bit between them (which is the British equivalent of Alabama) are about the only place in the country that still gets big European money - there are a few big datacentres in the area and several big call centres, and other businesses can still get grants. Which takes us back to another thread on this board...

When I was a student in Newcastle more years ago than I care to remember the Fenwick's display one Christmas was scenes from fairy tales with lifesize moving figures, including a handsome prince bending a bit over-vigorously to wake Sleeping Beauty with a kiss - by January both their noses had worn away completely.
