uncle michael wrote: No. I went on a brewery trip last year and it was been brewed then. I wonder if it's just cask that's brewed there now? That wouldn't be so hard to move somewhere else nearby.

It wasn't bad when I was there but the choice was 'Ba Ba Ba' or Bia Hoi. You can console your self that the price hasn't risen in 14 years.Cheers!

Just as a matter of interest, would anyone know if the closure of the Tetleys site in Leeds also means the closure of the distribution depot at Tingley which only opened about 5 years ago.

Whata rare occurance a pub actually opening not closing?Especially a totally new pub not owned by Wetherspoons in premises which had never been used as such. I went in myself on Wednesday it is, interestingly, called the Brewery Tap. I say interestingly because the Midnight Bell, on Water Lane, is nearer to the Brewery.I also have anecdotal evidence but no proof that Leeds Brewery have opened a Wine Bar on Bank Street. That's the road on the South side of the river that runs to the North side of Tetley's. Some irony if that's true. It might do well as the north side of Bank Street is Yuppy (remember that) Apartments.Back to the Brewery Tap. As Reginald says later in the thread than the post I quote it isn't anything like a Real Ale Pub. It is very modern and "minimalist". I could still smell the sawn wood. It did however have 12, at least "wickets" on the bar which although doubled up included the 3 standards of Pale, Best and Midnight Bell (premium mild). There were also two Leeds Brewery seasonals HellFire and Gathering Storm (Stout/porterish) and a guest. From memory there wers also 6 continental lagers (not Kronenbourg/Stella) on Electric Draft. Whether it will change or not all the spirits were upright behind the bar and not upside down on the wall. From the outside it does look more wine bar and its position on New Station Road isn't going to get it much passing trade. Plenty of people pass it but usually in a hurry to get to work or get home so I suspect its trade is going to rely on people in "the know". I don't even think it will get much trade from those who arrive in Leeds by train for a night on the town.I don't know if Reggie needed the conveniences but these are upstairs. At the top of the steps is observation windows to the brewery room. There is also a modern kitchen an seating for 30 or so.An interesting concept. I wish it well but I have my doubts.

Not good news at all about Tetleys. My Grandad worked there, my Dad too - and I worked there in 1985 on a YTS and (got took on!) and left in 1990.

I've been in a couple of times now. Last Friday it was fairly busy after work, which I guess is when it will make its money as people will have to stop for a pint and meet people either coming in or going out. Music was a bit loud, particularily in one corner which no-one seemed to be sitting in because of that, so I don't think it was just me, and the DJ setting up was a bit surprising, and I can't see that working. The beer was good - I'm not a big fan of the Leeds brews as I like bitter to be, well, bitter, but the Hellfire was excellent if strong - a 4.2 that tasted like that would be very good. The menu has some good local aspects to it and isn't too expensive. The microbrewery upstairs looks promising and it will be interesting to see what they come up in the coming months.I passed through on Thursday night and it was predictably a lot quieter at around 9.30, with considerably fewer staff on - there were about nine on on Friday, about half of whom were actually serving - some of them hadn't quite mastered looking to see who wanted serving. It might do OK on food during the day and I'm sure it will get passing trade in the evening as it's a lot nicer than the other pubs nearby, but it will need to develop a personality as it's a bit bland at the moment.

I shouldn't think so at all. The closure of the brewery will have nothing to do with the Tetley brew which will be mass produced down at carlsberg and trunked up to Tingley. After all australian and continental lagers have been brewed here for years. The chance to add throughput and volume to carlsberg will be a plus for them.If you have great memories of Tetley beers don't drink the Carlsberg cr@p out of respect, and support the Leeds Brewery!
