Maybe the railway pioneers knew something. The 'UP' line was towards the major city on the route.UP to LONDON,DOWN to the northern towns/cities.It is UP to Manchester,DOWN to Huddersfield or Bradford to LEEDS

If I may point out a thing or two in the scu.. Manchester / Leeds argument to who has the better facitilties. Manchester does have far more facilities per capita compared to Leeds, mainly due to the amount of money is thrown at the city on a year basis. Leeds is the thrid biggest city in England.. FACT! However, it is also the third richest. Why, because of out boundry area we have places like Linton, Wetherby, Otley Bramhope etc etc etc all within the city boundries. Because of this we receive one of the lowest amount of Central govmnt contributions in the UK. The money we get from the council taxes, even from the the more affluent is only just enough to keep the city going in each fiscal year. I admit they do waste a fair amount.Sc..Manchester, on the other hand has none of the affluence, WITHIN THE CITY BOUNDRY (not the greater manchester boundray, as that is ONLY an admin area akin to Humberside etc) Hence they receive up to ten time the amount of govmnt funds per year than Leeds. Thats the reason they will always appear to be a much better city than Leeds. Puplic oppinion also counts. Manchester is the darling of the press, in all things and as such the wider british population see's it as the bigger of the northern cities, when in fact it is about 5th on the city size scales. Were you also aware that Blairs constituency up in Durham receives far more each year than Leeds yet is a fraction off the size!!

I'm certain that wouldn't have happened to either of the Manchester teams. Leeds United ground was owned by LCC for a long time. They bought the ground back in the 80's when LUAFC was relegated. Once the ground was sold back to LUAFC they held share in the club and received a revenue from it. However, when The idiot board, run by Ridsdale sank the club into silly debt and the admin forced the old sharholders out for bugger all the Council lost a lot of money in it. It is hardley surprising that they wanted nothing to do with it after that. Would you.As to the two clubs in manchester going bust. I reckon had City not just been bought out then they would have been allowed to go to the wall as the press do not see them in the same way they see scum! MANure, on the other hand will always be the apple of the media eye and the press would see it as a national travesty if they were to go out of business. Never mind I can always dream of it!!

Very fine points mate, but wouldnt it be nice if we were actually number one at something all the time, with the exception of drive by shootings of course.

I think there all damn fine points! No need to be number one with a resume of that calibre, IMHO!! I'm more than happy to be a loiner, to support my city, football team (in actually going to a game and not sat in my glory coloured arm chair in kent, in the city I live in and following them through thick and thin), to follow one of the worlds best rugby teams, to be at the home of one of the most charismatic cricket teams ever to grace Englands finest wicketsLeeds is the capitol of the north, even if the rags, that claim to be newspapers fall over themselves to lick the backside of the minions over the hill!!!!
