The sad announcement was discussed in the Jail Pub in Peyia, Cyprus this evening. A sad day for them of us from Leeds who were weaned on Tets bitter. A note for the future - Where were you the day the announcement was made of Tetleys demise, incidently it was the same day as some guy or other was elected president of the US, small beer in comparision.

Im sorry for you Si,what will you drink then Adnams!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!PS I've just Googled Adnams, and the first hit says,"Adnams Brewery - bringing you a taste of Southwold to your home with quality wine, premium beer and stylish kitchenware"........? They do do a decent Christmas Pud though and the kitchenware costs as much as everything else in Southwold!!

It's a scandal*, but would appear to be part of a long term multi-national strategy to force us all onto lager served so cold it doesn't taste of anything and smooth "bitter" which needs no looking after or skill to serve, but is cheap to produce.Once the adjacent chemical works came down which meant that residential and commercial developments could be built on the site, the writing was on the wall. This no doubt seems a jolly good idea according to some accountants spreadsheet in an office in Copenhagen.Don't forget of course that production of John Smiths Bitter was quietly moved across the Pennines a while back, something they've tried to keep quiet. It now tastes nowt like it did and I've kept well clear since. The John Smiths Smooth rubbish is brewed at Tadcaster still though, which is ironic as you could make that chemical laden muck anywhere. The plus side is of course the booming number of small brewers, of which Leeds Brewery are one of the best, still making bloody good beer.* - a similar scandal being that the YEP tucked this very story away on a small section of page 2 today, whilst filling the front page with a story about some bloke with a smelly carpet...

At least one of them, can't remember which now, but I had a pint in Coopers the other week, produces a Yorkshire bitter that is suspiciously like Tetley bitter. Yeah, I think I'll stick to Black Sheep. And Riggwelter. And Landlord, Midnight Bell, Leffe, Urquell, Chimay, Budvar, hey, why stop there, Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gin and Tonic, Pimms, Guinness, Laphraoig, Bloody Mary, Hennessy XO.But not all at once, obviously. Wine Sah! Wine!!!Sounds like you have my tongue Si,except for Pimms,Bloody Mary,G and T,Guinness.

They could have had that in mind from the time they took over very under hand some of the so called take overs. But then have we not lost most of our industry. We depend more and more on imports not a good thing i dont think .I will not go into coal steel ect ect what happend to Great Britain or should that be great britain we dont have the same power we used to have and i dont think we ever will.Thats just my point of view. The writing was on the wall with the Rennaisance Leeds report a couple of years ago when it was deemed that the brewery was not in line with the councils aspirations for the area. That site will be worth a good lot of money(though not as much as last year) and will be ripe for redevelopment. The truth is is that Tetleys was not what it once was,its niche market is now dominated by superior beers made on a smaller scale.A small scale that Tetleys once was itself. That isnt the issue for me,the issue is that this is a full on in yer face Leeds institution, once gone never to return, like Lewis's,Burtonsand the clothing industry. However i dont believe there would be the public will to fight this because the general population of Leeds wont care and even if they did Carlsberg wont give a toss what they think.

Brandy,do you know whats really eating me.Its that i used to slag off the genreration that allowed Red Hall to be demolished for Schofields, and now we may be letting a bigger cultural crime occur.Im now in a similar position to that generation in that i know its a Leeds institution but ive no real connection to it(cause quite frankly i dont like the stuff, sorry Si)but i recognise its importance to Leeds, but i also recognise its location is completely at odds with the city centre.but then again,so is the market,oh bollox,oh bollox oh bollox.Sometimes i jate being a Loiner. For Scousers and Mancs its usually pretty straight forward, but for us ,well.........

Wine Sah! Wine!!!Sounds like you have my tongue Si,except for Pimms,Bloody Mary,G and T,Guinness. To paraphrase the man in the Revells ad, "But I like wine..."My favourite at the moment is "Black Stump," a 15% Australian Shiraz/Durif wine that tastes of liquidised plums. After a bottle of that, the face of the Joker from Batman appears in the bathroom mirror...Guinness was nice in Dublin, Pimms reminds me of my wedding, G & T is a lovely refreshing drink, but must be made with a decent gin, not Gordon's, whatever Gordon ******* Ramsay says, and I have mixed feelings for Bloody Marys. They are a good hang-over cure, but many years ago, I lost a game of "Spoof" and was required to drink, in-one, a concoction of brandy, creme de menthe, Bailey's and tomato juice. I don't recommend it.....the Bailey's and tom juice curdled into a solid, brown alcoholic mass tasting of Polo mints!Yuck!!!PS Sorry if it's a little early in the morning...................
