In answer to PhillD, Tetley's smooth has done so much to destroy the name of Tetley's bitteri nrecent years. However, if you got a pub that really took care in it's Tetley's cask ales then it was a marvelous pint.

Or am i being daft? No, I've heard the same story. It's funny, I was reading Stuart Maconies' book 'Pies and Prejudice' last night and he mentioned a Yorkshire friend saying that Tetley's 'doesn't travel'. Mind, he thought it was brewed in Doncaster, so he was probably getting confused with Wards or Darleys (both long gone of course). The brewing method is probably more important than the water used though: if it's still coming from the sinks below the brewery it probably has to be filtered so much that it won't really contribute anything apart from a different PH value. That it's brewed in Yorkshire squares is more relevant to its identity, though presumably not enough to contribute to any protected status it might have. Yorkshire bitter does appear to be becoming recognised as a category in real ale circles because of the technique, although that's not enough to give it protected regional status as happened to Newcastle Brown when Gallowgate closed.

First of all I think you should know my background. Myself and my nephew have been publicans since 1976 (BTW I am 60). I remember pulling pint after pint of Tetleys, Landlord,IPA whatever. There is no bad beer when it is delivered, but it needs selling pretty quickly. Times have changed so much. When I was out drinking as a lad everyone was drinking bitter or mild(or mixed) larger was not available (not in Hunslet anyway) the bitter was flowing so fast that one of my old regulars used to say to me that "It tastes like my mothers milk" We have been in the pub we are now for the past 10 years, nice place,no bad language allowed, great for anyone 18 to95 (yes I have a customer that age). Ten years ago our order was 8x18 gallons of bitter now we are down 3x9 of bitter. How times have changed. This not a sob story just a statement of fact. Michael (Do not post much but I read it everyday)
