It is called Austhorpe Hall — its garden is still unbuilt upon, ..."It's on a map dated 1893 but gone by 1908.There is also something about it in the 1862 Annals of Yorkshire which I have out of the library at the moment. If I remember this evening, I'll have a look! Thanks, Tasa. I've Leodised Austhorpe Hall (only got the other one!) and Austorpe Hall, but with no luck. As you say, the house is marked on the 1847 map, but it's been rebuilt on the 1908 one, and it's gardens are still "unbuilt upon," but have become an extended New Lane Place. I assume it was very old as it's marked in black-letter type.

Hi Sundowner!Re your posting on the 6th. I think you'll find thatThe Leeds Meter Company was on Moorfield Road.(It was also called 'Tower Works')In Armley! It became Kent Meters later and thenABB Kent's. I worked there from 1981 to '95!I didn't know of any other branch down MeadowLane/Gt Wilson St. but have been proved wrong OFTENon this site! Si wrote: Here's the 1908 map of the Fleece Lane area. The Spread Eagle was just above the "M" of Meadow Lane and The Brown Cow was just below the "E." The Union Tavern is the "PH" opposite the end of John Street. Anyone know the pub at the top of the map on Meadow Lane fronting Holroyd Court? Click on the map to blow it up (the map, not the pub, obviously.) There are also two more pubs just south of the Union Tavern. The pub near Holroyd court was the 'Old George' which survived to the sixties. It is shown here as a Sam Smith's pub - Sam Smith's took over McQuat's brewery and I would stongly suspect that the 'Old George' - like the nearby surviving 'Red Lion' - once belonged to that small brewery - which was nearby on Meadow Lane.

there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

As you say the pub opposite the junction with Victoria Road was 'The Union Tavern' [i.e building on right of pic] - pic from 1937 -seems to have been quite a grand building.

The pub right at the south edge of your map (corner of Meadow Road and Dewsbury Road) was the'White House' -which survived to the 1960's. (it isnt white - unlike the 'Red House'!!!!)photo is a scan - sorry about poor quality. in the background to right is the 'Palace' Cinema. For now I'm stumped about the other pub right at the top of Dewsbury Road.

Looks like somebody couldn't wait, from the state of the roadin front of the urinal! lol. Ta, Drapesy!Sundowner,You may well be right regarding theLeeds Meter co. I didn't join them till 1981 and they hadalready been taken over by Kent Meters by that time.Perhaps Kent's centralised the procedures, as often happensduring takeovers, and moved everything up to Moorfield Rd.before I arrived! We made water meters ,plus their cast iron?'mains' housings. Also repaired water meters from all the Water Boards across the UK. The lads didn't like repairing theWaste water meters at all as they came from Sewage works!Just before I retired, they took on Oil and fuel meters.which were messy and smelly on test!I will try and do a Google on the LMC. Might throw up summat.NOT waste water we hope!
