Milgarth police station area.

No mate,Old Millgarth was there in the early 70s,id go for much earlier than this for the pic here.I dont remember it my self but at a guess id say the pic was 1930s,wherever it is.

I remember Old Millgarth and also Union St. baths. Were they next door to each other?

Woah,is it still there.Looks like it on LS1s aerial pic.Might take a walk down,see if its still there.Its amazing what you take for granted sometimes,especially as the whole area is up for development.

The weights and measures is still there, just been to the market for some early morning bargains!!The footings for the buildings on the black and white photo which are next to the W&M Building are still there, and you can also see the old streetline for what i think was Ebeneezer street. The cobbles are still there and you can roughly make out the lining of other streets. (not 100% sure if it was Ebeneezer street but it was the one that is parallel to George Street running behind the W&M Building)My mum's partner worked on the new Milgarth and was finishing up in around 1975 as he remembers seeing the fire from the roof of the station. Both the stations co-existed and the old one was knocked once the new one was completed and they could move into it. If you want pics of the area I'd suggest you take them pretty soon as I dont think it is going to be long before they start destroying (unless the alleged credit crunch stops it.)

Hi Lee,According to the 1908 map, the streets in the area between Vicar Lane and the police station were, from right to left, running north/south, Harewood Street, Cross Union Street, and Millgarth Place. From top to bottom, running east/west were Union Street, Sidney Street/Ebenezer Street, Back George Street and George Street.Does that make your cobbles Ebenezer Street?

I can safely say that the old Milgarth was still operational in May 1974, as I, and a few others, were arrested after a Leeds match and taken to the old Milgarth. We were locked in the cells charged with unruly behaviour and released 3 hours later.

Hi Chrism things must have changed in there, in my late teens it was allways said if you got taken to Millgarth after having a few to many you got a punch or two before you got out.

Hi Si, That sounds about right. I've not got the map with me so i guess your right. Worth a look. I wonder if the stone sets are worth anything or will be left there when the area is redeveloped. I've attached another aerial view showing a couple of locations I'm sure people will be familiar with.Blue = New MilgarthRed = Old Milgarth OutlinePinky = Weights and MeasuresGreen = Old Market TavernYellow = The existing and quite obvious outlines of the old streets. The horizontal one I guess to be Back Geaorge Street according to Si's 1908 map and the vertical Milgarth Place?
