Sold books and all things supernatural/occult, I think. I don't fall into any of the categories you mention above(!), but I remember the name. I thought it was on Burley Lodge Road, near the bottom of Hyde Park Road, in the 70s. There was certainly an occult shop there. OH! It appears it's still there - I've just found its website!

Thanks, Tasa. I don't fall into any of those categories, either - I remember wandering in there in about 1976 and thought it qualified as a "quirky" shop, although I guess if you are a customer, it isn't quirky at all!

The original Socerers Apprentice is in Burley lodge road and has been there since around 1973. It was one of the first occult shops to open outside London. It opened another shop at Hyde Park Corner. That closed in the 1980's shortly after being firebombed by Christian Fundamentalist nutcases following it being featured on a notoriously biased Roger Cook alleged "Expose" of withcraft in the 1980's.I used to deal with Chris Bray the owner of the shop until he banned me for talking to the author of a book on the Pagan scene published in 1993 which featured an unflattering portrait of him and his shop by the author!
Steve JonesI don't know everything, I just like to give that impression!

I bought the biography of Aleister Crowley in the shop on Hyde Park Corner. It was a fascination place to browse for the uninitiated.

Not sure it was Christian fundamentalists or just plain idiots. I remember the Cook Report programme coming out around the same time as the 'satanic panic' about the supposed organised ritual abuse of children. Apparently one of the researchers on the programme, a bloke called Tim Tate, was a big believer in the whole 'phenomenon' before it was discredited. A vague and untrue link between the shop and child abuse therefore was all it took for some berk to spring into action.
