I've no complaints with school dinners.We never had anything which resembled todays 'fast-food'.2 fresh veg each day,roast or mashed(?) potatoes,chips were a rarity.The runny salad cream is achieved by thinning it with vinegar,makes it a lot more tasty.I remember the pink custard,billbery pie,apple crumble,coconut sponge.Not bad for 5 bob a week-or free for some.

School dinners were ace at my primary school (St. Josephs RC on Hunslet Rd.) Very rerely treated to Hot Dog and chips!!Otherwise two veg (swede & Carrot quebes mmmmm) and a meat (my favorites always in pie form!!) then fish on a Friday.Puddings were the usual and all ok other than the days we had rice pudding, still dont like that stuff!One thing we had which I loved and have never seen anywhere outside those dining room walls was Apricot Crumble and custard - my all time favourite (allthough judgement may be clouded from when I was 10 - absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that).Then the vast choice of the high school canteen came along and riuned me forever, Sauaage and Egg sandwhiches, Pizza and Chips, Curry!! - not a salad in sight. Bring back the days of you get what your given!!

we used to get a pudding that came in a tray to be cut into 8 pieces by the "server" on your dinner table it was a pastry case with cold rice pudding in and an apricot half on each portion.My sister told me it was a raw egg on top and consequently got my bit aswell! Pease pudding was another thing I couldn't stomach usually served with cabbage and fatty meat of indeterminable origin.The dinner ladies made us sit at the table until we had eaten everything,funnily enough my sister never helped me out on pease pudding days!

They didn't always cut the puddings up evenly.So there would be a few big ones and some smaller.The kids would lick their forks and plunge them into the big ones.That's mine they'd shout as the plunged their spittle and steel into their target.......

My old man used to have a van and did local deliveries.Loved the YEP run especially the green final when we didn't stop, just chucked the bundle at the waiting sports fans outside each newsagents.He did school meals runs when he ran round with pre-cooked puddings and pies in large rectangular steel trays.Always came home with half a tray of leftovers.T'owd lad mae it to 16 and a half stone.

The closest I ever came to school dinners later in life was working at Butlins ...     I remember the scrambled egg garnished with tomato soup.Sounds 'orrible but it was quite nice.The sausages we had were dry-baked in the oven on large trays-and skinless! Also new pototoes in summer with melted butter on top.Mmmm!
