Hi, It was on the left as you walked from Compton Rd.There are some photos on Leodis and the the comments with the photos give some history.Can't tell you whats on the site now.

Ok hands up who knew there used to be a cinema on Kirkgate?? hmm 5, 6... 7 - well not many anyway!Still it did - at nos 16 and 17 to be precise - just down from the Golden Cock. Named the 'Theatre de Luxe' it opened in 1910 - in a converted confectioners premises. The last peformance was on 26/05/1934 a film called 'Going Gay' starring Arthur Roscoe and Naunton Wayne!! (Insert own joke here)This Leodis pic comes 1936 - the cinema has closed but it would seem that the clothes shop that has taken over the premises have decided to keep the name 'de Luxe' by simply removing the word 'Theatre' from the sign - cheapskates!!!

The same site in 2008. The premises are currently vacant , a clothes shop having recently closed.

I think it was shoe shop that closed.No I'd never heard of this place. Is your next project 'Cinemas of Kirkgate' drapesy? Mind, it's a life's work recording the pubs of Kirkgate innit?

Must have been a very small cinema, backing as it does onto Fish Street. Is this in the Bob Preedy book of Lost Cinemas (my copy is buried somewhere in my bookshelves)?

Yes that's where my info came from - needless to say - Robert Preedy is the font of all knowledge when it comes to Leeds Cinemas. It was indeed very small - only 383 seats apparently.

does any one have pictures of the malvern picture saw knocked down in the 80s and replaced by sheltered housing for the aged us to play in it when i was a kid in the projection room nothin everything was stripped bare can any one tell me last film there too
