Some original characters have survived protected by the later coat of paint and are still legible now to confuse the issue.I think a "double s" would be quite rare in that context, (Linsey is 3,000 times more common in the UK than Linssey), and there are plenty of other possible alternatives. Also could it be Hill rather than Mill ??? Whereabouts is the sign located please?
We wanted to make Leeds a better place for the future - but we're losing it. The tide is going out beneath our feet.

there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

Lovely reminder here of long ago - this very faded gable end advertisement is on a building in Ash Road, Headingley at the junction with Trelawn Terrace. I can remember it being an off licence shop not all that long ago, but it is now converted into student flats.I imagine that "Coombes Nut Brown Ale" will be hard to find now !!
