Beefish - The Fox and Newt used to be called the Rutland Hotel - its still in stone at the top of the building. Its near Park Lane College, nowhere near the station. The Old George was on Lower Briggate , also not near any station. but near the viaduct - in fact opposite the Viaduct pub, which I missed off my list of town centre pubs...
there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

Seem to remember that changed its name a few times. No the first beer keller was on Belgrave Street where the Tepanyaki Japanise restaurant is now. Late 1960s early 70s. It was my first taste of draught Lowenbrau after a few stines went for the bus home but could hardly stand up, threw my wallet away because it was empty, what a state to be in. Settled for Teleys after that much safer.

The Beer Keller was somewhere behind the Registry Office I think. I spent many happy Friday and Saturday nights in the Hoffbrau.

I remember it well.Used to go there from 1990 up to about 96. I didn't know there was a carpet until they took it up ! I thought it was just a sticky floor. Great music like you say I never realised it was called 'Scrumpies'.We used to go on a Friday night(late70's,early 80's) during my headbanging days. There was asign above the door saying 'Central'so we referred to it as the central disco. The place was an absolute dump but the music bril.It wouldn't have lasted 2 minutes today with 'ealth and safety. The toilets defied description!

Is this the end of the story ...or the beginning of a legend?

Not strictly late '70s/early '80s (note correct use of apostrope!), but does anyone remember that bar / Italian restaurant under where Clarke's shoes is now and opposite the back of M&S. There used to be (fake?) vines growing around the ceiling. I used go to there for a nice carbonara and a beer, but the lady who ran the place often had rather dirty fingernails. I liked it anyway... xx

Ravioli, ravioli followed by ravioli. I happen to like ravioli.
