Some trouble with the new owners I think he said.Hope not!Arry Worrying indeed - I read that article too.Apparently the pub is currently owned by Enterprise Inns, but Leeds Brewery wanted to buy it as their first pub (to complement their excellent brewery), but the deal has reportedly fallen through - leaving a distinct air of uncertainty over it.It may not have the cachet of it's nearby neighbour, the Scabby Taps, but it is still a fine pub where they take pride in serving a high standard of real ale. I would be sad to see it close and be re-opened as another faceless city centre bar with nowhere to sit serving 27 different type of super chilled lager.

I am a part time student and currently writing a dissertation based on a Social History of Leeds Public Houses. Basicly I want to reflect how important a local pub was to the local community. Generally I am interested from 1900 onwards East Leeds (The Bank/Hunslet) and town centre Victorian pubs such Whitelocks/Jubilee/Victoria etc. I would like info on Leeds pub Architects on pub design such as Burmontofts Tiles. Other useful info would be:Leeds Victorian/Edwardian Public Houses Public House Entertainment including Music HallLeeds Public House Architecture/Archictects - (Interior Design)Crime stats involving Public HousesDeeds for PubsInformation on Landlords/CustomersLeeds Breweries (Tetley/Melbourne/Hemingway)Public House LegislationCommunities and the Public House (ie Irish community/The Bank)Any relevant info would be much appreciated. (My e mail address is [email protected]) Thanks for such an interesting site on Leeds. There's a lot more on here, but hidden in the other threads - those going back over a year, not just the ones you see here.No one will mind you using this as a resource I'm sure, but you will have to do the leg work and search!(Makings of a Really Good Production, eh dsco )

The pub over the road from the Town Hall was the Jubilee, it had a downstairs bar and an upstairs "night club". I was a regular there 1983-88 but dont remember any wild animals, wild women yes !, but not animals !

Just an idea here - I doubt if I'm right but hope it may help. I think you may mean the old Ritz/ABC cinema in Vicar Lane as there was no recent cinema in Boar Lane other than the tiny Tatler. Just a hundred yards away from the ABC, in New Briggate at the top of the narrow part of Merrion Street and opposite the "Wrens", is a corner shop on the first floor of which is a very interesting statue (still there) of a "Britannia" type lady in flowing robes. Just a thought.

Can any one remember a bar back in the sixties on Boar Lane...when you came out of the Peel, you turned right to go towards City Square, and half way along (could have been on the corner of Albion Street) there was a small establishment, and you went downstairs to the bar, pretty lively sort of a place on Saturday night, before people headed of to the the Mecca Locarno up the Arcade.
Ex Merchant Seaman, jumped ship in NZ in 1970...ex pat Leeds Lad. Born/lived lower end Camp Road, then up to York Road in the early sixties.

Thanks drapesy & Geordie-exile. No luck though. I will have to get some more info from my folks. Have discovered though that the "Goodman" on Hunslet rd & "Silver Cross" on Dewsbury rd, both gone now, were also run by my ancestors. Did not realise that I came from so many publicans. Might explain a few things!!!! Thanks to this website for pointing me to Leodis - I managed to see pictures of both establishments. Elly
