That's true. However, when they say "York Castle" walls, do they mean the Georgian buildings that house the Assizes and museum? I can't remember what sort of stone they are built of - millstone grit or magnesian limestone.
Thank you for all your help! I have studied Landscape History at college so am aware of the geology of the region. I am going to the library to get a copy of 'Building Stone Heritage of Leeds'

There used to be a house on the edge of the quarry where a family used to live "when I was a lad"And the quarry was much bigger as a lot was filled in..also any one remember the fires there used to be when the tyres got set alight!!
I was in Bramley Falls Park yesterday for the first time, and wondered if it had been covered here, and sure enough it has As the subject of gun emplacements has also come up recently, I noticed a couple of modernish looking caissons in the woods and wondered if there had been anti-aircraft guns in the area. It would make sense to cover the canal, Kirkstall Forge and possibly Airedale works (which I think were there during the war) from there.
