We wanted to make Leeds a better place for the future - but we're losing it. The tide is going out beneath our feet.

Hi Bramley4woods!Just noticed your December posting re Bryden's!Thanks for that info, old lad. never realised there was suchskulduggery in the main franchises! There was plentyat the lower end of the trade in the spares ,accessoriesBatteries etc. Our firm sold Lucas parts among many othersbut if any new Lucas car electrical innovation came out, youcan bet a pound to a pinch o' wotsit, that the Lucas mainagent would have been in the garages and spares shops firstthe day before we got there! All we got was the 'Top-up'after trade! Dog eat dog etc!Still enjoyed those years!Cheers Arry

Can anyone give me more history on the Western Cinema on Florence Street in Harehills? Is the building still there? And if so, what is it now, or what was built on there if it isn't? And going up Florence Street from Compton Road, was it on the left or the right? All answers much appreciated! Thanks!

There is a bit about this old cinema earlier on the thread - in particular check out the postings between farbank and myself at the top of page 9. I know it was demolished many years ago (25+)

Thanks for that Drapesy. Am just curious to know what is there now and whether I have the right location in mind. It's a long story but I need to know! I wondered if the entire building was destroyed by fire and they've rebuilt using the shell of it, or if the whole lot went and they rebuilt on the site? Thanks for your reply anyhoo!

There was a Picture house in Yeadon,on the high street. We used to go to the the saturday matinee in the 60's it was mayhem!maybe Zorro didn't hold our attention very well! It then changed to a two studio cinema but closed some years ago and was then a Bingo hall.It has now been turned into a bar called the Aviator.

There were two cinemas in Morley. The Pavilion - at the junction of South Queen Street and Townend - which was a proper theatre, with a backstage (Ernie Wise appeared there) and the Picture House on Queen Street (where Blockbuster Video is now) The Pavilion became a bingo hall in the early seventies, and then in 1990 After Dark nightclub, and then the mysterious Puccinos Italian Restaurant, which opened and closed very quickly indeed and now looks like a land based Marie Celeste - all the tables and chairs and bar fittings are still there and have been for about three years, but the place is closed. The Picture House closed about 1960. The last film was "The Blob" which I believe starred Steve McQueen. It became a Fine Fare Supermarket, (the cinemas in Pudsey and Ossett also became Fine Fares) then a motorists discount shop, and now it's blockbusters. In the docu/drama about Shipman for some reason it doubled as his surgery.

Along with the cinemas another thing that's disappeared are the various offices of the big film companies on Wellington Street, as I recall they were all in basements on the left hand side as you walked towards Central Station - presumably they were involved in distribution of copies.
