This was 5 years ago now and the place had been shut a while, but it struck as me a really interesting place... I wonder if anyone ever went there?     The Code Club is/was on Water Lane. Never been in it though.

Remember the Peel on Boar Lane, downstairs in the very damp club, late 60s early 70s also the very big bouncer on the door,I remember his nickname was lurch.no offence to the guy, we got on really well unlike others when he kept order on the door.

Not in Leeds centre but at White Cross Guiseley,Wikkies in the 70's and laterly known as Brummels with a few different names along the way, and also a change of venue before closing several years ago.More of a hovel than a night club but somewhere local to go after the pubs had shut.Despite the sticky carpet, had many a good night there.............from what I can remenber!!

That would be Tony - there are a couple of mentions of him elsewhere on the site if you do a search.

Damn you just named many places i visited regularly while out on a weekend Used to hit Brannigans first, then down to big Lil's,Break for the Border,Bar Berlin's,Mojo's watch my mates get freaked out at the Birdcage,Think about Europa but see a ruck so decide against it,also went to Planet Earth/Bondai alot,Majestyks before it became a Crack den.Always remember the free Bus that would take you to Barcelona's from city square it was a bit of dive but always had a top night there,Many memories, also worked there shortly before it closed .....Damn you JJB!!!

I seem to remember it was owned by the composer of the tune of the same name (although it could have been a rumour!) I seem to remember it being more of a coffe bar than a club. But I may be wrong! Brubecks was on Vicar Lane, next to the ABC, I never went in there, but you could see from the outside that the walls were decorated with the music of "Take Five"I saw the "Dave Brubeck Quartet" at the Odeon in 1963. Was it the Take Five that was converted into the Gemini pub then? there was a jazz club under the odeon on the corner of the headrow called studio 20. big bill broonzy, count basie, tubby hayes and ronnie scott all played there. leeds legend and photographer terry cryer talks about it in his book 'one in the eye', it has now become a bar again called 'sela' and has some of cryer's photo's of artists taken in the original club of the 50's.i still remember the first time i walked into the 'gemini' under the abc cinema. the jukebox had sparks 'this town ain't big enough for the both of us', and queen's '7 seas of rye' on the juke!
