To someone like me, who wallows unashamedly in nostalgia, these sights are so very sad. I know times have to change, but when you think of all the diligent work that's gone on in these places it makes you almost weep. The Braimes building is particularly interesting - even recently it had all the air of a long bygone industrial age, solid but slightly sinister - it managed to look "closed" for decades don't you thik ??Does anyone remenber the splendid FLETCHER'S DINING ROOMS nearby in the part of Hunslet Road which was closed off between Black Bull Street and the Adelphi ?? - they served up the finest "transport cafe" breakfasts and dinners you could possibly wish for - real mashed potatoes and proper gravy with everything - and full of honest working folk both siides of the counter - magic memories !!
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

Ok Ok I know..If you have VERY keen eyesight you might be able to pick out the name - 'WOOLPACK INN' (on the pic Phill found). The pub was at 26 Kirkstall Road, Durham Street is to the left and (I'm not making this up!) Fartham Street is to the RightBy the time of this picture( c-1955) the pub has closed and is being used by a bakery suppliers and a photographer's studio - you can just make out some photographs in the Right hand ground floor window..You can still see the bracket between the centre and right hand windows on the first floor where the sign, which you can see on Phill's blog picture, used to hang.Further up Durham Street the large chimney is part of the 'Borough Brewery' which had also closed by this time (pics/info thx to Leodis)

You make a good point there Chameleon! Anyway no pubs in this pic - though there is an old brewery. This is a shot down Durham Street and you can see the YCL factory (at that time called'YDC' - Yorkshire Dyeware and Chemical Co.) on the other side of Kirkstall Road. The former Borough Brewery is being used as a warehouse by Ind Coope and Allsopps- so presumably they took over the earlier firm. There's a very poor pic of the factory here - but the comment to it is interesting!http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... SPLAY=FULL
