Bash, twist, bash twist - unless you have used one you won't know what I mean.Schools that only allowed you to use a fountain pen, biros were forbidden.Books of log tables, slide rules, long division, fractions. There used to be half day closing too. Wednesdays in Leeds, Tuesdays in Morley.

'There used to be half day closing too. Wednesdays in Leeds, Tuesdays in Morley. 'Kirkgate Market still does.

I knew someone who worked in Schofield's offices and she had Wednesday afternoons off - she had to work all day Saturday though.

I remember tha chap who owned the shop where I had a Saturday job !!! years ago, was just closing one Wednesday and helped a blokey desperately wanting something. Then he identified himself as Trading Standards and did him! Nice sort wasn't he.

Day off yesterday!I gorra million! Well, alot!School inkwells (Ta Stevief!) Each desk had two inkpots(wells)and we used prehistoric penholders with removeable NIBS.(No!Nothing to do with slates and pencils!).Each week teacher appointed an 'Ink' and a 'Milk' monitor.Each Friday aft in the 'free hour' before hometime (at 4PM!).The class ink monitor would take out all the inkwells(carefully!)and carry them in a special container to the cartaker's 'office'in the boilerhouse. Caretaker had a can full of ink with a long spout and he filled each inkwell from it. The monitor carried the tray of40 plus filled inkwells and replaced them in the appropriate desks.This ink 'filling' always lasted the whole week! Posh pupils wouldbring their own bottles of 'Stephen's' violet or blue ink! Milk monitor had to bring in the crates and each pupil would file past and takehis 1/3pt bottle Monitor would collect empty bottles in crate and leave them outside the door,daily!Back pedal brakes on bikes.Flit guns for fly-zapping.Dolly blue in little bags to get white things whiter.Acdo tablets, same purpose? and water softening.Sylvan soap (NOT soapflakes) and Lava soap,one of whichfloated in the bath!(Which?)Vim and Ajax scouring powder(better than Cif!)Powdered 'bathbrick' for sink taps, (Wore the chrome off a bit!)Zebo black lead liquid for cast iron firegrates and ranges.Taking a 'Mashing' of loose tea and sweetened Ideal condensedmilkIn a small paper bag,to brew up at 'snap' time. (If the firm provided boiling water!)Collar studs to fix your 'detachable' collars to your shirtDetachable 'Dickie' fronts fixed on the front of a dress shirt,to change if you spilt your soup down it!'Passion killers',' 'Wrist breakers','Harvest Festivals'(ALL is safelygathered in!),names for large knickers with elastic legs!Ciggies;Ogdens 'Robins',ParkDrive,BDV (10 fo 4d!)Player's weights(still around?).
