I seem to remember an article, I think in the YEP about a year ago, in which someone was taken into an old well/mineshaft/tunnel (down Phill!), the only way in being from inside the church. Affraid the memory on the detail is a little vague, but there was deffinately something of this nature associated with the Church.(Looked at it in the low afternoon sun the other day whilst driving home - quite a majestic sight, looking down upon it's land).

Isn't there a friends of Mount St Mary's group out there? I think the statues were salvaged and kept in safe keeping if I remember correctly. Anyone know anything about it?

"There is a letter in tonights YEP on the subject which goes on to point out that there are abandoned mine workings under the site (apparently a large chunk of the school playground once vanished down one once upon a time)."I was at school when that happened - it was when there was a primary school on the same site (not sure what happened to that) but one day while we were all in classes a milk float (remember them!!) half disappeared into a big hole that opened up - we were told that it was an old mine shaft that had given way. Can't remember much more than that I'm afraid as it is a few(!!!!) years since I left Mount St Mary's.Always remember the church though, as someone else pointed out earlier it was bl**dy freezing & at this time of year (Easter) we had to endure hour's of masses.......Phill_d seems to have a good idea about the friends of Mount St Mary's but I don't know if anything like that exists, although from reading your posts Phill you sound like a guy who could find this sort of thing

Yes I'm interested in Mount St Mary's along with a few other places. I've found The Leeds Irish Community website that have documented Mount st mary's in publication, The ham shank e.t.c. I've not heard back yet. As I belief it the statues were removed several years ago for safe keeping and are now kept in a secret lock up/garage out of the vandals way. There site is here although the coyright is 2003. There site might not get maintained these days. I dunno!http://www.lihcs.org.uk/publications.html
