I don't have much to add to this discussion except the fact that I'm gutted to see the old place go; I, along with pretty much everyone of my generation in this town, learnt to swim there.Oh, and mention of Armley Baths brings back traumatic memories of the hideous hot water pipes that ran under the benches in the changing cubicles. The hiss and clouds of steam you'd get if you inadvertently dropped yer wet trunks on the pipes were truly fearsome (and the only way to retrieve them was with a stick). H&S wouldn't allow it these days, that's a fact...

Them were the days, I remember it being packed nearly every evening and on saturdays you had to get in early to get a decent swim in. Anyone remember the name of the lif-guard feller with the dodgy leg?

Anyone remember the name of the lif-guard feller with the dodgy leg? just found this site, I worked at armley up till last yearbut also learnt to swim there as a child. The person you are talking about is John Bonner, he is still around see him regually through another club. John tought me to swim age 3 in the small pool that is now the gym/studio. in the store rooms(were the shower room) you can still see the postions where the showers were. There is also the old changing cubicals under the pool

Been meaning to add to this for a bit... As those who've read the Ugliest building thread will know, I have a bit of a thing for brutal concrete buildings, and the International Pool is no exception. So I asked the director of development at the council about the demolition last year, and she said that the place has basically just reached the end of its life. It's falling down as Phill has described, and sadly a refurb (like K2 for example) isn't going to be viable apparently. She seemed to quite like the place too by the way, so I guess demolition would not have been LCC's preferred option. Will definitely be popping down to the Accumulator thing though:Event infodsco
