I do hope it won't cause your resignation from the site Arry!Cheers, dsco Can you post Scunthorpe? As in Typhoo put the T in Britain, who put the **** in Scunthorpe?

I was born after world war two but I do remember wearing hob nailed boots-they were creat for sliding(slurring) on the concrete playground at school.Your dad would carry out running repairs on your shoes with pieces of lesather bought from the cobblers on a last. major repairs would be carried out by the cobbler-who also sold pit clogs.this came to an end when rubber soled shoes came out-my first were a pair of 'tuf townshoes'my wife's dad was a beneficiary of boots for the bairns. His father was gassed in world war one and earned a living as a rat catcher for the council-but was out of work a lot because of the state of his lungs.

My dad & uncles qualified for this scheme back in the 30's, been of humble (Skint) Hunslet stock. The class teacher would send the kids with no toes or soles in their shoes to see the headmaster, he would give them a chitty which was exchanged for boots at the local council office.

We had a last - and my dad would use it to put "segs" into my shoes -made at Blakey's Boot Protectors - I nearly got a job there in the sixties - was it up Tong Lane or Armley - can't remember - but I remember the "segs"

LO TrojanBlakey's Boot Protectors factory wason Carr Crofts, Armley. Near the Baths if I rememberrightly?I think you had a lucky escape not going to workthere! A real scab shop from what people toldme. They'd never heard of Health and Safetyin those days!I have hammered a few 'Segs' into my boots, also my kids' shoes. Helluva job when rubberand 'compo' soles came in! Ruddy things used to bounce back out again! I believe you can stillbuy them (carded) in Woolworths, along withPhillips' 'Stick on' rubber soles and round 'heels'which fixed to your shoe heel with a short screw. You could turn 'em round when the edge wore down!PS Can't abide 'trainers'! (hideous footwear in my opinion).

Trouble was it was quite thick and would make you taller when you put the repaired shoes on!
