I remembered the name of the pub, it was 'The Royal George', but everyone just called it 'The George'.Had some great times in the Snooker Hall above the 'The Marquis of Granby'...you could get a pint in there also, plenty of wheeling and dealing done in there. Thanks for another pic of 'The Central Market', Drapesy...do you know what the name of the pub was on the opposite side of Duncan Street from the 'Central'...from memory I think it had a brownish marble facade, single storey. Its the 'Duncan' ' Ollie. - i'll post a pic although it doesn't really belong here as its still open. Its, err, how shall I put this??? 'Lively'?'Colourful'? 'Challenging'? - well I think you get the picture- not a pub for the fainthearted! when i was a taxi driver,i would often pick up 'zach dingel' from here,a great bloke in real life.

I hate to seem ignorant but there was the Duncan at one end of the block and the Star and Garter at the other - is the Star still there? Also in the sixties we used to go into a pub called the Victorian (?) bar on Lower Briggate - is that still there? I very rarely venture into the city centre on foot these days.

Star and Garter is closed and has been vacant for some time, not sure about the other place you mentioned.

You are not thinking of the Viaduct are you Trojan below Dysons. There is the Golden Lion down the bottom and a couple of other "trendy wine" bars on or just of the right hand side past the railway bridge. With the Hogs Head which is probably where Watson Cairns used to be.

I called in the Duncan this afternoon for a pint of Sam Smiths stout and next to me at the bar was a guy with a face which could have been weighed in for scrap.I've never seen as much metal in one boat race.I asked the barmaid about him after he left, she said he was a bit of a trouble maker and didn't like being stared at.It wasn't easy not to stare(but I managed it!)

That would be the guy who has studs where the beard and eyebrows should be. I used to see him regulalry in the bus station and got the same impression as the barmaid conveyed. Strange that! If you don't like being stared at you makr yourself a hell of a lot less conspicuous than that character does
